Wichita, Kan. – Freshman Kat Espinosa threw a complete-game shutout, scattering four hits as Oklahoma State's Cowgirl softball team defeated Wichita State 2-0 here Tuesday night in non-conference action.
Espinosa struck out four while walking just one and picked up her second shutout of the season. The freshman from Houston, Texas, improved to 10-3 on the year.
Oklahoma State, which moved up to 15th in the latest NFCA/Coaches Poll earlier Tuesday, scored one run in each of the first and second innings thanks to a pair of hits in each frame. Mariah Gearhart led off the game with a bunt single and after an infield hit by Katelyn Bright and a walk issued to Alysia Hamilton, the Gearhart scored on a fielder's choice by cleanup hitter Julie Ward.
The Cowgirls scored in the top of the second when Amy Graham was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Chelsea Garcia had a base hit through the right side of the infield, and both runners moved up on a sacrifice bunt by Kelsey Anchors. With two outs, Bright hit a single into shallow right field and Garcia was thrown out at home, but not before Graham scored.
Gearhart and Bright both went 2-for-4 for the Cowgirls while Garcia went 1-for-3.
Oklahoma State improves to 27-7 on the season, tying for the best mark through 34 games since 1993 when the Cowgirls went 29-5. OSU also went 27-7 in 1994, '98 and 2003. The Cowgirls No. 15 ranking is the highest since Oklahoma State finished the 2003 season ranked 14th.
