OMAHA, Neb. – A trio of Oklahoma State wrestlers put a cap on their respective All-America seasons Saturday morning at the Qwest Center, with freshman 133-pounder Jordan Oliver finishing fourth, junior 184-pounder Clayton Foster finishing sixth and sophomore 197-pounder Alan Gelogaev finishing seventh.
Entering Saturday night's final session, the Cowboys are sixth on the team leader board with 65 points. Senior 285-pounder Jared Rosholt could add to that total if he beats top-seeded David Zabriskie of Iowa State in the title bout.
In his first bout of the morning, Oliver picked up a 4-3 win over No. 6 Dan Mitcheff of Kent State. Oliver initiated the scoring with a first-period takedown, but Mitcheff wiggled free for an escape. With Oliver in the down position to start the second, the Cowboy freshman took just seven seconds to break loose for the escape and a 3-1 lead. Mitcheff evened the score, but Oliver regained the lead with an escape with 48 ticks left in the period. The two wrestlers started the third period in the neutral position and there was very little action until Mitcheff got in on Oliver's leg with 16 seconds left. Oliver fought Mitcheff off the rest of the way to claim his win and advance to the third-place bout.
In the third-place bout, Oliver lost an 8-0 major decision to reigning NCAA champion and third-seeded Franklin Gomez of Michigan State. Gomez was the aggressor from the start, bagging a takedown at the 2:07 mark of the first period and riding Oliver out for the duration. Gomez escaped to start the second period, then added a second takedown and rode Oliver out again. The third period started with the two wrestlers in the neutral position. Gomez added a final takedown in the waning moments plus riding time to put a cap on his win.
In his first bout of the morning, Foster never found a groove in his 8-3 loss to No. 7 Joe LeBlanc of Wyoming. LeBlanc controlled the action from the start, bagging two takedowns in the first period, then adding a three-point nearfall in the second period to take a 7-2 lead. The two wrestlers traded escapes from there, but Foster was unable to do anything else to get back in it.
In the fifth-place bout, Foster lost a 10-4 decision to second-seeded John Dergo of Illinois. Dergo scored a takedown in each period and added a two-point nearfall in the third period to claim his win.
Gelogaev only wrestled once Saturday, but was spectacular at times in his 12-7 triumph over No. 8 Sonny Yohn of Minnesota in the seventh-place match. Gelogaev had a pair of thunderous throws that also led to back points, including one with the score tied at seven and only five seconds remaining. Yohn took Gelogaev down with 27 seconds left before Gelogaev turned and threw him to the mat for the winning reversal and nearfall. In fact, Gelogaev was very close to pinning Yohn at the very end, but time ran out on the fall attempt. Gelogaev finished as one of only 13 unseeded wrestlers to earn a spot on the All-America podium.
“It was a good effort from Z. He had to scrap and fight all tournament,” Coach John Smith said. “It's good to cap it off with something. All-America is a good start for him.”
“I wrestled alright,” Gelogaev said. “I still have to learn a lot. Hopefully we'll see a lot better next year. I knew it would be hard and I had some ugly losses this year.”
Saturday's evening session begins at 6:30 p.m.
