Rosholt Earns Spot In NCAA Title Bout

OMAHA, Neb. – Oklahoma State 285-pounder Jared Rosholt earned a spot in the NCAA championship bout where he will face a familiar foe in top-seeded David Zabriskie of Iowa State. Rosholt punched his ticket into the finals with a 3-0 win over No. 4 Zach Rey of Lehigh in Friday night's semifinal bout.
As a team, the Cowboys enter the final day of the NCAA Championships in fifth place on the team leader board with 60.5 points.
Rosholt and Zabriskie have a long history, with Zabriskie winning six of their previous nine meetings. Rosholt has claimed victory in three of the last five head-to-head clashes.
“This is perfect. We have a pretty big rivalry,” Rosholt said of his title bout against Zabriskie. “I lost to him at Big 12s and let's do it again to see who the national champ is. I'm going to do what I've done all season and make him wrestle. Let's not stand around and go to overtime. Let's get after it and give the fans what they want to see.”
Rosholt and three of his teammates remain alive, with 133-pounder Jordan Oliver, 184-pounder Clayton Foster and 197-pounder Alan Gelogaev all still competing in the wrestleback. Foster will square off against No. 7 Joe LeBlanc of Wyoming Saturday morning. An All-American for the first time in his career, Foster can finish no lower than fifth this year. He was an 8-7 winner over 2008 NCAA champion and three-time All-America Mike Pucillo of Ohio State in his first wrestleback bout Friday night. Foster raced out to a 7-1 lead on the strength of two takedowns, a two-point nearfall and an escape, but Pucillo slithered back into the match and eventually tied the score at seven with 18 seconds left. Foster broke free for an escape with 11 seconds remaining to win. He then followed that up with a 5-3 win over No. 9 Phil Keddy of Iowa.
Wrestling in the championship semifinals, 133-pounder Jordan Oliver lost a tough 1-0 semifinal match to top-seeded and undefeated four-time All-American Jayson Ness of Minnesota. After a scoreless first period, Ness rode Oliver out for the second. Oliver returned the favor in the third to send the bout into overtime tied at zero. After an uneventful sudden victory period, Oliver rode Ness out for the first half of the tiebreak period before being ridden out himself in the second half. A second sudden victory period also went by without a point, so the bout went to a second tiebreak period, where Ness rode Oliver out for the first 30 seconds, but was able to escape five seconds into the second half of the tiebreaker. Oliver then came at Ness with a flurry of offense, but the Gopher star held him off to clinch his victory. Oliver will take on No. 6 Dan Mitcheff of Kent State in the wrestleback tomorrow morning.
Sophomore 197-pounder Alan Gelogaev earned All-America status with a win in the wrestleback Friday night. Exactly one minute of riding time was the difference in his 3-2 win over No. 7 Anthony Biondo of Michigan. The Cowboy sophomore bagged a first period takedown before Biondo got free for an escape to bring the score to 2-1. Biondo escaped to start the second period, but that would cap the regulation scoring because Gelogaev chose the neutral position to third and Biondo didn't have the offensive firepower to overcome Gelogaev's riding time edge.
Gelogaev then lost to sixth-ranked Eric Lapotsky of Oklahoma, 6-5. The Cowboy raced out to a 5-0 lead on the strength of a takedown and three-point nearfall, but Lapotsky got back in it and scored the winning takedown with five seconds left in the third period. Gelogaev will meet No. 8 Sonny Yohn of Minnesota tomorrow morning in the seventh-place match.
OSU 141-pounder Jamal Parks and 174-pounder Mike Benefiel were knocked out of the tournament Friday night, both one win shy of earning All-America status. Parks scored the first takedown in his bout against No. 11 Chris Diaz of Virginia Tech, but it was all Diaz from there, as the Hokie claimed a 7-3 victory over the second-seeded Cowboy. Benefiel surrendered the deciding takedown with only 14 seconds left in the third period in his 3-1 defeat at the hands of Pennsylvania's Scott Giffin.
“It was a tough day for us with some good and some bad,” Coach John Smith said. “I'm pleased with Jared Rosholt and Clayton Foster and Z coming back in the wrestleback to All-American. It's good to come out of this with four All-Americans and we're excited to see Jared wrestle for the championship.”
