OSU Splits on Day One of Tournament

CLEARWATER, Fla. — The No. 18 Oklahoma State Softball team split two games during its first day of the USF-The Game Tournament as they beat Dartmouth 4-2 and fell to Maryland 2-1 on Friday. The Cowgirls are now 23-7 on the season.
In the first game of the day, the Dartmouth Big Green scored the first run of the game as two hits and a fielder's choice loaded the bases in the first inning and Molly Khalil was hit by a pitch to score the runner from third.
The Cowgirls tied it up in the second inning as Chelsea Garcia hit a double down the left field line to score Katie Asher from second. Two more runs scored in the fourth inning when the Dartmouth catcher overthrew to second and Garcia scored from third. Breana Casaus scored when Mariah Gearhart hit an infield single.
OSU added another run in the sixth inning when Kelsey Anchors scored from first on a double by catcher Ashley Boyd.
Dartmouth tacked on one more run in the last inning when they loaded the bases with two hits and a hit-by-pitch and the runner on third scored when the next batter walked.
Sarah Odom started in the circle for OSU and threw three innings, allowed one unearned run off four hits and struck out three. She was relieved by Taylor Marcum who picked up the win. She improved to 2-0 after pitching three and 2/3 innings, allowing one run off five hits, striking out three and walking one. Anna Whiddon picked up her third save of the season when she came in to get the last out of the game.
In the second game of the day, the Cowgirl bats were only able to score one run off six hits. In the fourth inning, Alysia Hamilton led off the inning with a hit to center field. After a walk and sacrifice bunt moved her over to third base, she was able to score on a passed ball.
The Maryland Terrapins two runs came in the fifth inning on a two-out Cowgirl error. After two hits, there were runners on second and third with two outs, when OSU first baseman Julie Ward overthrew Hamilton at first and both runs scored. That was Ward's first error of the season.
Kat Espinosa threw the complete game for OSU, gave up four hits for no earned runs and struck out five. However she picked up the loss and is now 7-3. The Maryland pitcher, Kerry Hickey, picked up the win improving to 7-3. She threw all seven innings, giving up six hits for no earned runs and struck out 12.
The Cowgirls will resume play tomorrow and will face Florida Gulf Coast at 9 a.m. CT and host South Florida at 2 p.m. CT.
