March 19, 2010
OMAHA, Neb. – Oklahoma State is in sixth place through Friday morning's third session at the 2010 NCAA Wrestling Championships with 43 team points. A pair of Cowboys are alive in the championship semifinals, with four Pokes still going in the wrestleback.
Freshman 133-pounder Jordan Oliver and 285-pounder Jared Rosholt cemented their status as All-Americans with wins in the championship quarterfinals. Oliver and Rosholt are guaranteed to finish no lower than sixth in their respective weight classes. It is the first All-America honor of Oliver's young career and is the third straight All-America honor for Rosholt.
Oliver avenged one of his two regular season losses when he claimed a 5-4 victory in the first tiebreak period over No. 5 Boris Novachkov of Cal Poly. After a scoreless first period, Oliver rode Novachkov out in the second, but was slapped with a stalling point with eight seconds left in the period. Oliver escaped quickly in the third period to tie the score at one. A Novachkov takedown put Oliver down, 3-1, but the Cowboy escaped and his riding time advantage pushed the bout into overtime. After an uneventful sudden victory period, Oliver rode Novachkov out for the first half of the tiebreak period, but was slapped with yet another stalling call to fall behind, 4-3. Oliver started the second half of the tiebreak period in the down position, and this time it was Novachkov who was penalized for stalling on top with eight ticks remaining. Oliver then escaped with three seconds left to claim his 5-4 win. Oliver will get a chance to avenge his only other defeat of the year when he takes on top-seeded and undefeated Jayson Ness of Minnesota in the semifinals.
Rosholt made relatively easy work of West Virginia's Brandon Williamson in his 8-2 quarterfinal victory. Rosholt scored a takedown in each period and added an escape and a riding time point to cap his win. The victory was the 124th of Rosholt's career and puts him just one win shy of tying for fifth with Cory Baze and Johnny Thompson on the all-time OSU win list. With his win, Rosholt will battle No. 3 Zach Rey of Lehigh in the semifinals. Rosholt scored a first-period pin over Rey when the two wrestlers met earlier in the year.
Second-seeded 141-pounder Jamal Parks suffered a 5-3 upset defeat in the championship quarterfinals at the hands of No. 10 Tyler Nauman of Pittsburgh. Both wrestlers scored first-period takedowns and escapes, but Nauman put himself in a position to win when he rode Parks out in the second period. With the score tied at three and Nauman holding a substantial riding time advantage, Parks cut him loose early in the third period. Nauman fought Parks off for the remainder of the bout and his riding time point brought the final to 5-3.
OSU 174-pounder Mike Benefiel lost a hard-fought quarterfinal battle with No. 3 Chris Henrich of Virginia by a 5-4 score. Both wrestlers scored first-period takedowns and added first-period escapes to send the bout into the second period tied at three. They traded escapes in the second and third periods, respectively, but Henrich's 1:58 riding time advantage was the difference.
In Clayton Foster's 184-pound quarterfinal bout, the Cowboy suffered a 4-1 defeat at the hands of No. 4 Michael Cannon of American University. Cannon bagged a first-period takedown and Foster got loose to bring the score to 2-1. A quick escape from Cannon to start the second period brought his advantage to 3-1. Cannon then put a full-period ride on Foster in the third and added a riding time point and seal his win over the Big 12 champion.
OSU 197-pounder Alan Gelogaev was a big winner in the wrestleback, pinning American's Daniel Mitchell at the 3:39 mark of their bout. Gelogaev dominated from the start, bagging three takedowns in the first period to go up, 8-3. The Cowboy sophomore started the second period on top and flipped Mitchell to his back for the resounding pin. He then followed that up with a 6-5 win over No. 11 Patrick Bond of Illinois. Gelogaev scored two first-period takedowns and added two escapes to put himself in a position where he is now one win away from earning All-America status. He can secure that honor with a win over No. 7 Anthony Biondo of Michigan later tonight.
Cowboy 157-pounder Neil Erisman was eliminated from the tournament Friday morning after losing a 6-5 decision to Jake Kerr of Iowa. The two wrestlers ended the first period tied at 3-3 after each scored a takedown and an escape in the opening three minutes. A pair of second period escapes from Erisman and a Kerr takedown sent the bout into the third period deadlocked at five. Kerr escaped immediately in the third and Erisman couldn't generate the offense to claim the victory.
Teammate Alex Meade was also bumped out of the tournament when he lost an 8-2 decision to No. 4 Jon Reader of Iowa State in the wrestleback. Reader controlled the bout from the start, bagging a takedown and a three-point nearfall in the first period to set the tone for his win.
Action resumes at 6 p.m. tonight.
