OMAHA, Neb. – Through the first day at the 2010 NCAA Wrestling Championships, Oklahoma State is second on the team leader board with 26 points and has advanced five wrestlers into Friday's championship quarterfinals. Cowboy 133-pounder Jordan Oliver, 141-pounder Jamal Parks, 174-pounder Mike Benefiel, 184-pounder Clayton Foster and 285-pounder Jared Rosholt all won twice Thursday to advance through to the championship quarterfinals. Rosholt picked up OSU's biggest win Thursday when he pinned Edinboro's Chris Birchler just 58 seconds into their bout in the round of 16. The Cowboy senior took Birchler down just 23 seconds in, then turned him to his back and nearly pinned him before settling for a three-point nearfall. After the nearfall points were awarded, Rosholt put Birchler on his back a second time and finished him. Also in the round of 16, Oliver was a 6-4 winner over Bucknell's David Marble. The Cowboy freshman scored three first-period takedowns to set the tone for his win. Parks followed with a 3-1 triumph over Virginia's Derek Valenti. Parks scored a first-period takedown and added an escape in the third period to cap his scoring. Benefiel put together a gutsy third period in his 3-1 win over No. 11 Josh Patterson of Binghamton. After a scoreless first period, Benefiel was ridden out in the second period. Benefiel was in the down position again to start the third period, and Patterson maintained control until the Cowboy sophomore broke free for an escape, then immediately scored a takedown with 38 seconds left to go up, 3-0. Benefiel rode out Patterson for the rest of the period, with Patterson's lone point coming when overall riding time was factored in after the bout. Foster erased a 4-1 first-period deficit in his 10-8 win over No. 12 David Craig of Lehigh. Foster escaped after being taken down twice in the first period and started the second period in the down position trailing by a 4-2 score. He tied the score at four with a reversal just four seconds in, then added a two-point nearfall to take a 6-4 lead. Craig took the down position to start the third period and escaped to bring the score to 6-5. A Foster takedown widened the Cowboy's advantage to 8-5, but Craig tied the score at eight after an escape and takedown of his own. With Foster owning the riding time advantage, Craig was forced to cut Foster loose, but was unable to threaten the Cowboy junior again. OSU 165-pounder Alex Meade and 197-pounder Alan Gelogaev were both knocked out of the championship bracket and into the wrestlebacks Thursday evening. Meade suffered through a 3-1 loss to No. 7 Ryan Morningstar of Iowa after surrendering a key takedown in the first period and riding time was the difference in Gelogaev's 4-3 loss to No. 8 Sonny Yohn of Minnesota. After losing his opening-round bout earlier in the day, 157-pounder Neil Erisman claimed a medical forfeit victory over No. 6 Dustin Schlatter of Minnesota in the wrestleback. OSU 125-pounder Chris Notte lost twice on Thursday to be eliminated from the tournament. Championship quarterfinal and wrestleback action is set to begin at 9:30 a.m. Friday.
