Cowgirls Split Two at Tiger Classic OSU softball beats Virginia 5-2 and falls to No. 19 LSU 5-1

BATON ROUGE, La. (OSU Athletics ) --The Oklahoma State softball team split games in day two of the Tiger Classic beating Virginia 5-2 and falling to host No. 19 LSU 5-1. The Cowgirls are now 6-3 on the season.

In the first game of the day against Virginia, sophomore Julie Ward hit in every run of the game for the Cowgirls. In the first inning the first baseman hit her second grand slam of the season to put the Cowgirls up 4-0. The fifth run came in the sixth inning when Kelsey Anchors led off the inning with a single to left field. She stole second, advanced to third on a base hit by Alysia Hamilton and scored on another hit by Ward.

Senior Anna Whiddon threw the complete game for the Cowgirls and allowed no earned runs off four hits, walked three and struck out six. She improves to 4-2 on the season.

Freshman Kat Espinosa started the second game of the day against the Tigers and threw the first three innings hitless. However in the fourth inning, LSU strung together six hits for all five of their runs. Sarah Odom entered the game after the third hit and finished the game for Oklahoma State.

The Cowgirls scored their lone run in the top of the fifth as freshman Amy Graham was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring Mariah Gearhart home. Espinosa picked up her first loss of the season and falls to 2-1. She threw three innings, gave up three hits for three runs, struck out two and walked one. Odom threw three innings in relief, gave up two runs off five hits, struck out two and walked one.

OSU will play No. 4 Michigan in the consolation game of the Tiger Classic tomorrow following the championship game scheduled for 10 a.m.
