BATON ROUGE, La. —The Oklahoma State softball team picked up its first two losses of the season as they fell to No. 4 Michigan 7-0 and No. 19 LSU 6-4 on Friday at the Tiger Classic.
In OSU's first game of the day against Michigan (4-1), both teams were hitless until the bottom of the third when the Wolverines centerfielder, Molly Brausher, got a hit through the right side and joined Stephanie Kirkpatrick on base. Michigan then hit back-to-back singles to score three runs. After another walk, catcher Roya St. Clair hit a three-run home run over the left field fence to make the score 6-0. The Wolverines added their seventh run with a solo home run in the fifth inning by Maggie Viefhaus.
The Cowgirls (5-2) were unable to get a hit in the game and had just two base runners. Kelsey Anchors reached on an error by the pitcher and Mariah Gearhart took first after being hit by a pitch.
Junior Jordan Taylor threw the no-hitter for the Wolverines and tallied 10 strikeouts to improve to 3-0. Senior Anna Whiddon picked up her first loss of the season for the Cowgirls and fell to 3-1.
In the second game, Oklahoma State got on the board first against LSU (5-3) in the second inning thanks to a pair of sophomores. Chelsea Garcia reached first on a fielder's choice and was knocked in with a home run to center field by Kelsey Anchors. The Cowgirls scored again in the third when Julie Ward hit a double to right field and scored Katelyn Bright.
Freshman Kat Espinosa started in the circle for OSU and threw the first three innings without allowing a hit. However in the fourth inning, the LSU bats got hot. Ashley Langoni hit a two-run home run to left field and Jessica Mouse had a two-RBI double. She was followed with back-to-back RBI-hits from Kirsten Shortridge and Ashley Applegate to make the score 6-3.
After the first three hits of the inning, Espinosa was relieved by Whiddon. She faced the next five batters giving up three hits for three runs and walking one. Sarah Odom entered the game for Whiddon to get the last two outs of the inning.
The Cowgirls added one more run in the sixth inning as freshman Amy Graham hit a double to center field. She advanced to third on a single from Garcia and scored on a fielder's choice by Mariah Gearhart.
Odom finished the game for the Cowgirls and gave up only one hit in 2.2 innings pitched and struck out four. Whiddon got her second loss of the season and is now 3-2. Brittany Mack picked up her first win of the season for the Tigers and improved to 1-1 while Rachele Fico earned her first save.
OSU will play day two of the Tiger Classic tomorrow and face Virginia at 11:00 and either LSU or Michigan in a second game.
