MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The No. 2 Oklahoma State wrestling team picked up a big 17-16 win over No. 3 Minnesota at the Sports Pavilion in Minneapolis Sunday.
With the dual starting at 174 pounds, the Cowboys (2-0 overall) fell behind, 9-3 after the first four bouts, but rallied to rattle off wins in four of the final six bouts to claim their fourth-straight victory over the Gophers (3-1 overall).
Heroes of the dual included freshman 125-pounder Jon Morrison and sophomore 133-pounder Jordan Oliver. Morrison claimed a 7-5 sudden victory win over a two-time All-American in No. 4 Zach Sanders and Oliver rolled to a 22-7 technical fall win.
Morrison's win came at a key juncture, as the Cowboys trailed the dual, 9-3 at the time and Morrison was an underdog against the accomplished veteran Sanders. Morrison got on the board first when he bagged a takedown in the first minute of the match, then suffocated Sanders with a hard ride for the duration of the period. Morrison started the second period in the down position and escaped quickly enough to keep his riding time advantage intact. Sanders hit a duck-under takedown in the waning seconds to trim Morrison's lead to 3-2. Sanders chose a neutral start to the third period, but Morrison nailed him with a thunderous double-leg takedown to go up, 5-2. A Sanders escape followed by a Sanders takedown tied the score at 5-5. Sanders then erased Morrison's riding time point to send the bout into overtime. In the sudden victory period, Sanders came after Morrison, but Morrison kept his composure and turned it into the winning takedown with 11 seconds remaining on the clock.
Oliver followed Morrison's upset win with a 22-7 technical fall victory over Thane Antczak in 7:00. Oliver bagged five takedowns in the first period alone and then extended his lead to 16-6 after two periods when he added two more takedowns and a two-point nearfall. Oliver escaped to start the third period, then added two more takedowns in the waning moments to secure the all-important bonus points for his team.
“Hats off to Jon Morrison for getting a tough, tough win, but he can't sit on a lead,” OSU coach John Smith said. “He was controlling the match and had good hand control, but let up. He can't just sit on a lead. He hit a big takedown at the end to win it, though. Jordan Oliver getting a technical fall was huge as well.”
After Oliver's win, the Cowboys led in the dual by an 11-9 score. No. 4 Mike Thorn of Minnesota outmuscled Luke Silver en route to an 11-3 major decision victory to give the Gophers a 13-11 lead in the dual. It would amount to Minnesota's last lead however, as Jamal Parks was a 2-0 winner over No. 20 Dan Zilverberg at 149 pounds and Albert White rolled to a 10-3 win over unranked Pat Smith at 157 pounds to give OSU a 17-13 lead in the dual.
A wild bout at 165 pounds that saw No. 15 Cody Yohn of Minnesota escape with a 6-4 win over Dallas Bailey of OSU put a cap on the dual, but was not enough to propel the Gophers to victory.
The Cowboys return to action when they host No. 8 Oklahoma at 6 p.m. on Dec. 12 in Gallagher-Iba Arena.

174 pounds: In a rematch of the Kaufman-Brand Open final, No. 12 Scott Glasser of Minnesota was a 6-1 winner over No. 11 Mike Benefiel of Oklahoma State to avenge his earlier defeat at the hands of Benefiel. Glasser connected on the first takedown of the bout when he hit a double-leg takedown with 15 seconds remaining in the first period. Glasser extended his lead to 3-0 with an escape to start the second period. Benefiel wasn't able to get on the board until he escaped with 29 seconds left in the third period. Trailing, 3-1 and knowing Glasser had riding time, Benefiel took a pair of desperate shots in the waning seconds, but Glasser blocked off the first and then turned Benefiel's second shot into a takedown of his own with five seconds left to take a 5-1 lead. His 1:29 riding time advantage pushed the final score to 6-1.
184 pounds: In a second Kaufman-Brand Open rematch, No. 20 Kevin Steinhaus of Minnesota also avenged a previous loss when he picked up an 8-2 win over No. 11 Chris Perry. Steinhaus turned a smooth duck-under move into a takedown early in the first period to go up, 2-0. Perry escaped to bring the score to 2-1, but a long-range shot by Perry was turned into a Steinhaus takedown just before the end of the first period. Perry started the second period in the down position and escaped late in the period to bring the score to 4-2. A Steinhaus escape to open the third period brought the Gopher's advantage to 5-2, then he extended it to 7-2 when he caught Perry in a bad shot. When the riding time point was factored in, Steinhaus was an 8-2 winner.
197 pounds: Facing each other for the second time this year - with the first matchup a Foster win at the NWCA All-Star Classic – No. 5 Clayton Foster was a 7-4 winner over No. 6 Sonny Yohn. After a mostly-quiet first period, Foster exploded in for a takedown with six ticks left to take a 2-0 lead. He then escaped to start the second, then after a penalty point on Yohn, Foster bagged another takedown to go up, 6-0. Yohn got loose before the end of the period to bring the score to 6-1. With Yohn in the down position to start the third period, he escaped to trim Foster's lead to 6-2. Desperate to rally, Yohn picked up a late takedown, then cut Foster loose immediately, but it was too late for anything more, as Foster left with a 7-4 win.
285 pounds: Giving up more than 25 pounds to a highly-ranked opponent, Oklahoma State's Blake Rosholt lost a 5-1 decision to No. 11 Tony Nelson. While it was a loss for Rosholt, the fact that he kept it to a decision despite giving up significant weight became a factor in the Cowboys winning the dual by a single point. Nelson got on the board with an early takedown in the first period, then rode Rosholt out for the remainder of the period. Nelson opened the second stanza with an immediate escape to take a 3-0 lead, but that capped the second-period scoring. After getting hit for stalling on bottom in the third period, Rosholt escaped with 20 seconds left to trim Nelson's lead to 4-1. When Nelson's 3:28 of riding time was added on, the Gopher was a 5-1 winner.
125 pounds: Oklahoma State freshman Jon Morrison knocked off a two-time All-American when he scored a 7-5 sudden victory win over No. 4 Zach Sanders to improve to 10-0 on the year with three of those wins coming over ranked opponents. Morrison's win came at a key juncture, as the Cowboys trailed the dual, 9-3 at the time and Morrison was an underdog against the accomplished veteran Sanders. Morrison got on the board first when he bagged a takedown in the first minute of the match, then he suffocated Sanders with a hard ride for the duration of the period.
133 pounds: Top-ranked Jordan Oliver stormed to a 22-7 technical fall victory over Thane Antczak in 7:00. Oliver bagged five takedowns in the first period alone and then extended his lead to 16-6 after two periods when he added two more takedowns and a two-point nearfall. Oliver escaped to start the third period, then added two more takedowns in the waning moments to secure the all-important bonus points for his team.
141 pounds: Luke Silver lost an 11-3 major decision to No. 4 Mike Thorn. Thorn controlled the action in the first period with two takedowns and a two-point nearfall to hold a 6-1 lead after the opening stanza. A Silver escape was the only scoring of the second period. Silver started the third period on top, but fell behind, 8-2, when Thorn reversed him. A Silver escape brought the score to 8-3, but Thorn bagged a takedown with 10 seconds left to go up, 10-3 and his 1:53 of riding time gave him an 11-3 major decision victory.
149 pounds: Jamal Parks gave the Cowboys a 14-13 lead in the dual with his 2-0 win over No. 20 Dan Zilverberg. Parks scored a quick takedown in the first period to go up, 2-0 and built up more than two minutes of riding time before the clock hit zeroes to end the opening stanza. Parks started the second period in the down position and was unable to get off the bottom, as Zilverberg rode him out for the duration of the period. The third period started with the two wrestlers in a neutral position. Zilverberg tried a few desperation shots late, but Parks successfully blocked them off to secure his 2-0 win.
157 pounds: With the team score very much in question at the time of the bout, Albert White claimed a 10-3 win over Pat Smith to give the Cowboys a 17-13 lead in the dual. White hit a duck-under early in the first period to go up, 2-0. A Smith escape was followed quickly by a second White takedown to bring the score to 4-1. Smith escaped again, only to be hit with a thunderous White double-leg takedown before the end of the first period. Smith was in the down position to start the second period and escaped to trim White's lead to 6-3. Another White takedown gave the Cowboy an 8-3 lead after two periods. White started the third period in the down position and after Smith was hit for stalling on top and White escaped, the score was 10-3 in favor of White. White frantically pushed for a late takedown and bonus points, but Smith took a defensive posture the rest of the way to keep the final at 10-3.
165 pounds: In a wild bout with a frantic finish, No. 15 Cody Yohn of Minnesota was a 6-4 winner over No. 10 Dallas Bailey. After a scoreless first period with very little action, things got going in the second period when Bailey escaped to open the scoring. Yohn flirted with a takedown after that, but Bailey fought him off to force a restart. A wild scramble ensued and in the process, Bailey was slapped for a stalling point to bring the score to 1-1. The third period opened with Bailey hit for a technical violation, giving Yohn a 2-1 lead. Yohn then added a takedown to go up, 4-1. A Bailey escape brought the score to 4-2 in favor of Yohn, but Bailey hit a takedown to tie the score with four seconds left. Almost as soon as they hit the mat, Yohn reversed Bailey with a fraction of a second remaining to escape with a 6-4 win.
In addition to the dual against Minnesota on Sunday, a handful of Cowboys competed at the Fort Hays State Bob Smith Open on Saturday. Freshman John Kindig pinned all five of his opponents en route to winning the 141-pound bracket and claiming Outstanding Wrestler honors at the event. Fellow Cowboy Stephen Swan was also a champion at the event, winning the 157-pound bracket. 125-pounder Tyler Dorrell and 174-pounder Chris McNeil were both second-place finishers.
