OSU Ready for UNM Thanksgiving Classic
Oklahoma State's women's basketball team (4-0) will hit the road for the only time during the non-conference schedule this weekend when it travels to Albuquerque, N.M. for the UNM Thanksgiving Classic. The Cowgirls, who are coming off an 82-52 win over UT Arlington on Monday, will take on Rhode Island (3-1) on Friday at 6 p.m. (CST). Depending on the outcome, OSU will play either New Mexico or San Francisco at 6 or 8 p.m. on Saturday.
The Field
Rhode Island is off to a 3-1 start after winning, 52-44, at Fairfield on Monday. The Rams are led by Megan Shoniker's 18.5 points per game. San Francisco is 1-2 with its lone win coming on Nov. 15 against San Jose State. The Dons have a pair of players in double figures with Donnisha Taylor leading the team with her 11.7 points and 6.7 boards per game. New Mexico has won two in a row since losing its season opener against Texas Tech. The Lobos are coming off a double overtime win against California on Saturday. Lauren Taylor checks in as the squad's leading scorer at 13.7 points per game.
Tournament Play Under Budke
The Cowgirls have played in five in-season tournaments under head coach Kurt Budke. In 2005, OSU finished second to New Mexico at the UNM Thanksgiving Classic. The following year, OSU won the Hawaii Invitational, starting a seven-game winning streak in tournament play. OSU won The Desert Draw in 2008 in Las Vegas as well. Last year, the Cowgirls advanced to the championship game at the Preseason WNIT and fell in the championship game at the Junkanoo Jam.
OSU Vs. The Field
OSU and Rhode Island have met on one previous occasion, with the Cowgirls claiming a 90-82 win in the first round of the 1996 NCAA Tournament in Athens, Ga. OSU has taken on New Mexico five times and has won twice after last season's 70-56 victory in the semifinals of the Preseason WNIT. The Cowgirls are 1-2 all time in Albuquerque against the Lobos. OSU and San Francisco have never met.
What 2 Watch 4
OSU head coach Kurt Budke enters the weekend two wins shy of No. 100 for his career in Stillwater ... the Cowgirls are 9-3 in regular-season tournament play under Budke ... during that time, OSU has won two titles and has three runner-up finishes.
