OSU Head Coach Kurt Budke
On the game
“I'm very excited about the win tonight. Kansas State is a very tough matchup. They play some of the best man-to-man, if not the best in the league. The way they are playing right now, they make the game ugly. Deb Patterson is one of the best coaches in this country and definitely in the Big 12. She does what she has to do to win. She's got her team playing as well as any team in the Big 12 right now. They understand their roles and they execute and they execute to perfection and you better hop they just have an off night a little bit because they can shoot the lights out, but I'm excited about the win tonight on a night that I didn't think we shot it particularly well.”
On playing zone defense
“We would make an adjustment, they'd make an adjustment. It was just a little bit of a chess match out there. I was really proud of the girls for adjusting to their shooters and where they were and they are just so hard to match up with. Ashley Sweat is one of the tougher individual matchups in this league. We thought we had to keep her off the free throw line tonight for us to have a chance to win. We thought if we could keep them under 20 free throws tonight we'd have a chance to win. We thought we could give up 10 threes and win the game as long as we kept them off the free throw line. I thought the girls did a pretty good job of identifying and at least making some of the shots challenged.”
On Andrea Riley
“She is the go-to player and she was getting the shots that she gets on a normal night. It just happened to be one of those nights that she wasn't on. We're not going to go away from her. Tegan didn't have a great night, Andrea didn't have a great night shooting, but we found a way to get it done and that's what I'm most pleased with tonight.”
Andrea Riley
On if it was a tough shooting night
“Definitely, but I think we stuck together and we pulled it out. It's not going to be every night that we shoot 40-something percent. We just kept it together and kept our head in an adverse situation and we pulled it out.”
On the defensive performance
“Coach has been really stressing that, saying, “We have to buckle down because playing K-State is really hard.” It's because they spread you out so far and you can't come off of shooters. I think we really conquered on the defensive end really well.”
On taking over the game near the end
“Coach expects me to try to take over and my team expects me to. I really took on that role to just make a play. It's not all about just scoring at that time. If we need a basket or something then I'm going to try to get it and if not, I'm counting on my teammates.”
Megan Byford
On Precious Robinson
“She came in and gave us some really big put backs and rebounds when we needed her to. She kind of has taken over that role of where she comes though in the clutch when we really need her.”
On changing to a zone defense
“It's something we've been working on in practice. The thing about K-State is throwing different defenses at them all night; kind of keeping them on their toes. I think we did a good job of that and the zone kind of threw them off a little bit. It was something they weren't used to seeing. The last couple of games they've been played straight man, so it was something they weren't used to playing against.”
On the technical foul firing up the fans
“It was kind of a surprise. I was surprised that he got a technical, but it just really got the fans into the game even more. They were great all night. It's one of those energies that it makes it so much easier as a player. You feed off of it and it just gives you that extra spark and I think that's really what carried us tonight, having such a great crowd out there.”
Kansas State Quotes
KSU Head Coach Deb Patterson
On the game
“When you look statistically at this game I think you understand that Oklahoma State dominated us on the boards, but I think more than anything defensively they caught us standing around and not taking the kind of shots that we would have preferred. Credit their defense for taking us out of rhythm tonight. Offensively Andrea (Riley) really beat us up with her 31 points from the floor. I think for us what was so significant was their defense took us and put us in a position of standing still. We never really established any kind of significant post presence and credit their defense on the night for that.”
On Oklahoma State
“I thought they had players step up and make big plays when they needed them and we tended to make big turnovers or make poor shots when we needed to make big plays. They competed overall with a sense of aggressiveness and intelligence and made the most of their possessions down at both ends.”
On Andrea Riley
“If you're not on it, if you're not accountable, this young lady is one of the best in the country. This is a team that tonight played very smart. They didn't give in and Riley continued like she always does. She measured the game and was patient. I think that's something that she's added to her game that has put her in position against defensive efforts like the one we brought to the floor tonight.”
On the key to stopping Riley
“I don't know. We didn't do it.”
Ashley Sweat
On Kansas State's post play
“I don't think that any of us showed up tonight. That's such a huge part of our game to establish something inside and that's where we've had success this year. I take a lot of the responsibility for that, making smarter decisions at the high post.”
Kari Kincaid
On Andrea Riley
“She came up with the big plays and we didn't respond well after that. We just let her continue to make those plays. She made three or four at the very end. It's crazy to think we were down three at that point. We didn't have five players playing together at all for 40 minutes. That's what Andrea Riley-type players can do to you and they're all over the Big 12 so we definitely have to learn from this.”
On Kansas State's three-point shooting
“I thought we were relying on three's the whole game. Give credit to Oklahoma State's zone. They forced us in to that and we didn't attack like we should have. It's something that we definitely relied on and we didn't use all of our strengths.”
