IOWA CITY, Iowa - The fourth-ranked Oklahoma State wrestling team lost to top-ranked Iowa, 19-16 in front of 10,967 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena Saturday. OSU dipped to 8-1-1 on the year, while Iowa improved to 14-0.
OSU entered Saturday's dual having won nine of its previous 10 duals over Iowa, including the previous four straight at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Things got off to a bad start for the Cowboys when senior 125-pounder Chris Notte suffered through a 13-4 major decision defeat at the hands of fourth-ranked Matt McDonough.
Cowboy freshman 133-pounder Jordan Oliver answered by picking up the biggest win of his career to date, a 3-2 victory over No. 4 Daniel Dennis. Oliver scored the winning takedown with less than two seconds left in the bout. The action was very slow in the first two periods as the opening stanza went scoreless and the lone point of the second period was a Dennis escape. Oliver escaped to start the third period and was slapped with a stalling call with 58 seconds remaining in the period to go down, 2-1. After a scramble near the edge of the mat, Dennis was able to escape an Oliver takedown bid with five seconds left in the third. With the Hawkeye crowd on its feet for the final five seconds roaring in approval of Dennis' performance, Oliver shot in on the restart and bagged the winning takedown with less than two seconds on the clock.
After a 4-0 upset loss by fifth-ranked Cowboy Jamal Parks to unranked Hawkeye Montell Marion at 141 pounds and a 21-5 technical fall win from top-ranked Iowa 149-pounder Brent Metcalf over Quinten Fuentes, Neil Erisman got the Cowboys back in the win column with a 16-7 major decision victory over Aaron Janssen at 157 pounds.
No stranger to big wins early in his career, Cowboy 165-pounder Alex Meade added another highly-ranked victim to his hit list with a 5-3 victory over No. 4 Ryan Morningstar. Following the same formula as his win over then-No. 2 Dustin Schlatter of Minnesota earlier in the year, Meade scored the first points of the bout when he shot in on Morningstar's leg and finished the takedown early in the first period. After a 21-second ride by Meade, Morningstar wiggled free for an escape to cap the first-period scoring. Meade took the down position to start the second period and broke free in short order to go up, 3-1. The third period started with Morningstar in the down position and the Hawkeye senior escaped to trim Meade's lead to 3-2. Meade then added another takedown to crush Morningstar's chances.
Iowa took a 16-10 lead after a 9-1 major decision win from top-ranked Jay Borschel over Mike Benefiel at 174 pounds, then pushed its advantage to 19-10 after No. 8 Phil Keddy was a 3-2 winner over Clayton Foster. OSU cut into the lead when sophomore 197-pounder Alan Gelogaev was a 3-2 victor over Luke Lofthouse, but heavyweight Jared Rosholt's 7-5 win over Blake Rasing wasn't enough to push the Cowboys to victory.
The schedule doesn't get any easier for the Cowboys, as their next dual is against No. 2 Iowa State at 2 p.m. on Jan. 24 at Gallagher-Iba Arena.

125 pounds: No. 4 Matt McDonough of Iowa was the aggressor from the start in his 13-4 major decision win over OSU's Chris Notte. McDonough controlled the first period, bagging two takedowns and mounting 1:20 or riding time in the first three minutes. It was more of the same in the second, as McDonough reversed Notte quickly to extend his lead to 6-1, then went on to slap a hard ride on the Cowboy senior for the duration of the period. McDonough added three more takedowns and 4:01 of riding time to put a cap on his bonus-point victory.
133 pounds: Cowboy freshman Jordan Oliver picked up the biggest win of his career to date with a 3-2 victory over No. 4 Daniel Dennis. Oliver scored the winning takedown with less than two seconds left in the bout. The action was very slow in the first two periods as the opening stanza went scoreless and the lone point of the second period was a Dennis escape. Oliver escaped to start the third period and was slapped with a stalling call with 58 seconds remaining to go down, 2-1.
141 pounds:The biggest upset of the dual came at 141 pounds, where unranked Montell Marion of Iowa was a 4-0 winner over No. 5 Jamal Parks of OSU. There was no action to speak of in the first period. Marion escaped to start the second period, then got in on Parks' leg and eventually tripped him down to the mat to score a takedown and go up, 3-0. He then put a hard ride on Parks for the duration of the period, going over the one-minute riding time mark in the process. Marion started the third period on top and rode Parks out for the entire two minutes. The riding time point brought the final score to 4-0 in Marion's favor.
149 pounds: Perhaps the best wrestler in the nation at any weight class, Iowa's Brent Metcalf was dominant in his 21-5 technical fall win over unranked Cowboy Quinten Fuentes. The bout was stopped at the 5:23 mark. Metcalf scored seven takedowns and added two three-point nearfalls and an escape to claim his win.
157 pounds: Oklahoma State picked up a bonus-point victory at 157 pounds, where Neil Erisman stormed to a 16-7 major decision victory over unranked Aaron Janssen. Erisman raced out to a 4-1 lead after bagging a pair of first-period takedowns. The Cowboy junior started the second period in the down position and escaped to go up by a 5-1 score. Janssen crept closer when he scored a takedown of his own. A technical violation on Janssen followed by an Erisman escape and another Erisman takedown just before the end of the second period gave Erisman a 9-3 advantage going into the third. From the top position, Erisman turned Janssen to his back twice for a three-point nearfall and a two-point nearfall before being reversed to extend his lead to 14-5. The Cowboy added an escape and 1:16 of riding time to win, 16-7.
165 pounds: No stranger to big wins early in his career, Cowboy 165-pounder Alex Meade added another highly-ranked victim to his hit list with a 5-3 victory over No.
174 pounds: Cowboy 174-pounder Mike Benefiel suffered a tough 9-1 major decision defeat at the hands of top-ranked Jay Borschel. The lone scoring of the first period came when Borschel was able to use Benefiel's forward momentum against him and score a takedown 50 seconds in. The second period started with Benefiel on top, but Borschel escaped quickly then added a second takedown to go up by a 5-0 margin. With Benefiel in the down position to start the third period, he was called for stalling, then escaped to trim the deficit to 6-1, but another Borschel takedown plus a riding time point brought the final score to 9-1 and gave the Hawkeyes a bonus-point win.
184 pounds: Clayton Foster lost a 3-2 decision to No. 8 Phil Keddy. While no points were scored on the move, perhaps the key moment of the bout came in the first period when Keddy re-aggravated Foster's pre-existing shoulder injury. After a short break for injury time, Keddy was able to shoot in and almost immediately score a takedown. Foster broke free for a quick escape to cap the first-period scoring. With Foster in the top position to start the second period, Keddy didn't take long to get loose for an escape to extend his lead to 3-1. The third period began with Foster in the down position and the Cowboy junior was able to escape fairly quickly to bring the score to 3-2. Foster had the best takedown attempt of the third period, but after swooping in on a double-leg attempt, Foster's shoulder would not allow him to finish the takedown bid. Foster had a couple more dangerous chances, but Keddy fought him off to seal his victory.
197: Alan Gelogaev's 3-2 win over Luke Lofthouse at 197 pounds trimmed the Hawkeyes' lead in the dual to 19-13. The lone takedown of the bout came in the first period, with Gelogaev shooting in on Lofthouse's leg, then finishing the ordeal by tripping the Iowa junior. Lofthouse escaped, then escaped again to start the second period. The final stanza started with Gelogaev in the down position. He escaped immediately to take a 3-2 lead. The two wrestlers went scoreless for the duration of the bout.
285 pounds: Top-ranked Cowboy heavyweight Jared Rosholt went into his bout with Blake Rasing in the unenviable position of knowing that he needed a pin to salvage a tie in the dual for his team. While the pin did not come to pass, Rosholt was a 7-5 winner. After a scoreless first period, Rosholt escaped to start the second, then scored the first takedown of the bout shortly thereafter to go up, 3-0. Rosholt rode Rasing out for the duration of the period. The bulk of the action came in the third period, where after a neutral start, Rosholt scored a takedown to go up, 5-0. Rasing then escaped and logged two takedowns to trim Rosholt's lead to 6-5. An escape by Rosholt capped the scoring.
