Cowgirls Advance With 7-0 Win Over Red Raiders

Oklahoma State utilized a seven-run fifth inning to pick up a 7-0 victory over the Texas Tech Red Raiders in the first round of the 2009 Big 12 Softball Championship here Friday evening at Don E. Porter/ASA Hall of Fame Stadium. The Cowgirls advanced to the quarterfinals and will face Missouri Saturday morning at 11 a.m.
Texas Tech had several opportunities to push runs across the plate in the early innings. The Red Raiders left two runners on second and third in both the first and second frames. They also had a runner on third with one out in the third and a runner on second in the fourth. In the fifth, Tech had runners on first and third with one out before Alex Watkins lined into a double play to end the threat.
Oklahoma State led off the inning with a walk issued to Chelsea Garcia. After a sacrifice hit by Kelsey Anchors, Garcia scored the first run of the game on a double by leadoff hitter Mariah Gearhart. A base hit by Katelyn Bright down the leftfield line scored Gearhart. A single by Alysia Hamilton preceded a sacrifice fly by Sam Heinlein, scoring Bright with the fourth run of the inning.
With two outs, Megan Castle walked. A line drive by Julie Ward to right field rolled to the fence, scoring both Hamilton and Castle. Back-to-back doubles by Taylor Marcum and Garcia made the score 7-0 Cowgirls.
Oklahoma State (34-19) was swept by Missouri (42-9) earlier this season in Stillwater, losing to the 11th-ranked Tigers 5-3 and 6-1.
