COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Oklahoma State's Oleksandr Nedovyesov advanced to the second round in the singles bracket at the NCAA Tennis Championship on Wednesday with a 7-6 (4), 7-5 victory against Auburn's Alexey Tsyrenov in College Station, Texas.
"I knew it was going to be a tough match, because I've played him two times before and I've never beaten him," Nedovyesov said. "I tried my best and worked hard. I tried to come back in the second set, but he broke me early on. I just tried to find my game. I'm getting better and better and finally beat him."
With the win, Nedovyesov improved to 19-3 this spring and will now face Notre Dame's Brett Helgeson in the round of 32 tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. at Texas A&M's George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.
The Cowboy junior will also open doubles play tomorrow afternoon with teammate Nathan Byrnes. The duo will take on Florida State's Jean-Yves Aubone and Vahid Mirzadeh in the first round.
