Cowgirl Golf Repeats At Big 12 Championship
April 27, 2009 | Cowgirl Golf
LUBBOCK, TexasÂOklahoma State's women's golf team successfully defended its title at the Big 12 Championship on Sunday at The Rawls Course in Lubbock, Texas, winning its league-best seventh Big 12 crown.
The victory marked the first time the Cowgirls have won consecutive league titles since claiming three consecutive wins from 2001-2003. OSU's wire-to-wire victory was also its second straight after emerging victorious at the Ping/ASU Invitational earlier this month.
In conditions that saw winds gust up to 39 mph, the Cowgirls posted a 20-over-par 312 during their final round for a 33-over tournament total of 909.
The Aggies came in 13 strokes back and in second place at 922, while Oklahoma finished third at 938. OSU entered the final round at the par-73, 6,564-yard layout with a six-shot lead over Texas A&M.
With the victory, first-year head coach Annie Young became the first person in Big 12 history in any sport to win a Big 12 Championship team title as both a competitor and a coach. Young helped the Cowgirls to the league title in 2005 as a player.
A&M did produce the event's individual medalist in Ashley Freeman, who defeated Oklahoma's Kendall Dye on her second playoff hole after the duo were tied after 54 holes at 6-over 225.
For the second consecutive year, the individual leadberboard was top heavy with Cowgirls. One year after having the top three individual finishers, OSU had four of its five starters finish in the top 10.
Senior Pernilla Lindberg and Caroline Hedwall tied for third place and one stroke off the lead at 226. Lindberg posted a 78 during her final round to post her third career top-10 finish in the event.
Hedwall finished with an 81 to get to her 7-over total for her fourth top-five performance this season.
Senior Amanda Johnson earned her best finish of the year, taking sole possession of fifth place at 228 after a final round of 80. The Tulsa, Okla., native finished in the top 10 in each of her three career Big 12 starts.
The squad's low round of the day came courtesy of freshman Caroline Masson, who posted a 75 to finish alone in ninth at 231. The Gladbeck, Germany native now has four top 10s on the season.
Senior Karin Kinnerud finished tied for 15th place at 235 after posting a closing 79.
The Cowgirls will now await their NCAA regional destination, which will be announced on Monday.
