Cowgirls Win Conference Opener Against Kansas

STILLWATER, Okla. (OSU Athletics ) Â— The Oklahoma State softball team defeated Kansas 2-0 in their Big 12 opener Saturday night in Stillwater. Junior Anna Whiddon threw the complete game, two-hitter shutout for the Cowgirls.

Sophomore Mariah Gearhart led off the Cowgirl half of the first inning with a bunt single and then stole her 22^nd base of the season. After advancing to third on a ground out by Katelyn Bright, Gearhart scored on a sacrifice fly by fellow sophomore Alysia Hamilton, her 37^th run batted in of the season. The Cowgirls (24-6) wouldn't score again until the sixth when freshman Julie Ward started the inning with a home run to right-center field, her sixth of the season.

Whiddon (12-4) threw her sixth complete game shutout of the season giving up only two hits, walking three and striking out seven.

Val George (7-8) threw in the circle for Kansas (10-15) and gave up two runs off six hits, walked one and struck out seven.

The Cowgirls will face Kansas again tomorrow at 2 p.m.
