OSU vs. Texas
February 06, 2009 | Cowgirl Basketball
OSU Head Coach Kurt Budke
On the game
“Obviously, I want to give Texas all the credit in the world. What a great team that is. That's the best team we've played to this point. They're deep. They're quick. It doesn't matter if any of them get in foul trouble. They can lose anybody and still be fine. We came in tonight knowing we had to switch some defenses just because Megan's (Byford) hurt and some things like that. Whatever we switched to, they knocked it down, so give them all the credit in the world. But as I say that, there were some positives tonight for us too. We got some good play from some kids that have struggled a little bit this year. It's a long year and that's why I was pretty proud of them for continuing to fight the rest of the way and give effort and close the gap a little bit. There are definitely some positives out of this game tonight. I thought our rebounding tonight was pretty good. Ten turnovers was pretty good, so we can build on this and we can get better.”
On Tegan Cunningham
“That's one of the positives right there. We're starting to figure out a little bit better where she likes the basketball and the things she can do. I thought she was pretty good tonight. Thirteen points, five rebounds; Hey, I'll take that every night in the Big 12. You better believe that.”
On Texas's shooting
“I hadn't seen anybody come in this gym and shoot like that ever. They did a good job of making the extra pass and finding the open person and they just made you pay. They're a hard team to guard because they just have all the pieces to the puzzle. I said earlier in the year, ÂI think there's three or four teams in this league that could get to the Final Four and they're definitely one of them.”
On Oklahoma State's slow start
“I have no idea. We've had good practices and everybody was excited. I don't know. It's February and I think that happens sometimes. You can't afford to do it very often.”
On Oklahoma State's tough stretch of games
“When you go Texas, Oklahoma, Baylor, at Kansas State, at Texas; I don't think anybody in America wants that, but it's there and you just take it one at a time.”
Oklahoma State Guard Andrea Riley
On Texas' high 3-point percentage
“Of course you are going to get frustrated when someone is shooting 71 percent from 3-point in the first half. You have to give them credit. They were open and they hit shots.”
On upcoming big games
“Bedlam is coming up. There is a positive and a negative coming out of this, because we have so many games in this stretch to redeem ourselves. It's going to be hard and passionate throughout for 40 minutes.”
Oklahoma State Forward Shaunte' Smith
On first half vs. second half rebounding
“I guess it just created more shots for us. We had an off night on our shots. We were not shooting that well. I guess that is a bright spot, because we have been working on our rebounding. We have not been doing too well. We just have to do (what we did in the first half) that the rest of the game, and pull everything together.”
On thoughts on game
“We just have to focus more. Our focus was off tonight. We always play good defense, but tonight was not our best effort. We just have to go back to basics.”
Texas Head Coach Gail Goestenkors
Opening Statement
I'm just really proud of my team. I thought overall this was one of our best games. I thought the first half was probably our best half offensively of the season. We shared the ball and we hit the open shots and it came from a variety of players it wasn't just one player, it was the entire team. I was very pleased offensively.”
On the quality of road wins
“It's tough to go on the road in this league, especially against a great team like Oklahoma State, so we're just really happy to be coming away with a win.”
On having two consecutive road wins
“It's tough to do. I think it takes a mental and a physical toughness to go to somebody else's home court and so we're just really pleased.”
Brittainey Raven
“I've been in a little bit of a slump these last couple of games and the main thing that I've been trying to focus on is my defense and trying to let my offense come to me.”
“It's hard when you miss one or two in a row you try not to think about the shot, but when you make it the next one will come and the next one will come and they're going to go in.”
Kathleen Nash
“It's a lot of fun when everybody is hitting their shots. I think once other people start making them everybody thinks ÂOh, we can make them too'. It's contagious and it's just a lot of fun when we're making them like that.”
