Oklahoma State vs. Kansas
February 26, 2009 | Cowgirl Basketball
OSU Head Coach Kurt Budke
On the game
“I think tonight we kind of saw what we've done all year long. We got ourselves in a hole, found our way out of the hole and then didn't finish. That's just been a problem all year long and it's going to be a problem to the end. What it comes down to at this point is a lack of leadership. That's where Danielle Green last year would have taken a hold of this thing and would have figured out a way to get it done.”
On not finishing
“You get what you deserve and we can look back at a lot of games that were just like this where we had a chance to win. Last year we found a way to win and this year we found a way to lose. It's pretty much that simple.”
On continuing to play hard
“The coaching staff will continue to work hard and prepare like we're playing for the Big 12 Championship every night out and the players need to do the same thing.”
On Kansas forward Danielle McCray
“They've got a great player in Danielle McCray and we knew if we couldn't keep her around her average that we were going to have trouble tonight and she came in and did a wonderful job.”
“We tried four different defenses on her and I don't have a fifth one. Just give her credit for being a great player and coming through for her team.”
“I never felt like we were over the hump. I never felt comfortable with the rhythm of the game at all.”
“I think we're giving these kids a chance to be in these ballgames but you have to have some people step up.”
Kansas Head Coach Bonnie Henrickson
On the game
“The difference, I think, in the game for us is that in the second half, we don't turn the ball over. In the first half we had 19 shots and 14 turnovers. We're fortunate that they struggled offensively. The bad news is we had 14 turnovers. The good news is we were still up. We knew they'd be better in the second half and knew we could be better because our zone offensive execution wasn't very good; just never got any rhythm; never got the ball to the free throw line. “
On defending Andrea Riley
I thought our kids did a good job of not fouling Riley. That's what we talked about, getting her take some tough shots, rotate early, step up, She drops one nice pass to a layup and we got her to take some tough shots and she hit shots. She's a great player, she's going to make some shots, but we never let her get really, really loose and in great rhythm.”
On the road win
“It's huge for us, it's been a long time. I'd walk home if I had to. It's just been a long, long time.”
“I can't give the kids enough credit for hanging in there and being tough and staying together.”
On playing in February
"I'm a firm believer, in February, you don't stay the same. You either get worse or you get better. Teams don't stay the same. Because in February you're either playing for something or you lost the chance to play for something or your'e going to hit a fork in the road. You're either going to get better or you're going to get worse, and we talked about that. We're either going to get better or we're going to get worse. You guys decide how you're going to play it. And I think we've gotten a little bit better."
Kansas Quotes
Forward Danielle McCray
On the road win
“It feels great. I think we all came together tonight as a team. We knew they were going to go on the run and we knew our game plan and our preparation for tonight's game and I think we stuck to that. We all stayed together and that's the main thing on the road; and knocking things down that we had; open shots. It's a great win and I think we deserve this with how we've been putting in time and believing in ourselves and trying to get some things worked out here at the end of the season.”
On tying her career high
“I think my teammates did a good job setting me up. It just helps when everyone around you can score too.”
Center Krysten Boogaard
On the road win
“It feels so good to finally get a road win. I don't even remember the last time we got a road win and it feels really good to get one, especially in the Big 12; especially against Oklahoma State, because they beat us last year in the Big 12 Tournament really bad. We all came together and we played together and we got the open shots. We made the extra pass and when they went on the run, we stayed tough. We didn't separate like weak teams do. I think that's what got us through the end of the game.”
Guard Sade Morris
On the road win
“It feels great. I couldn't stop smiling because it feels so good to get a road win. I mean it's just exciting that we finally got two in a row and we go a big coming up on Saturday and we've got to keep going with this steak we got. We can get Nebraska at home.”
