Cowgirls Head To Junkanoo Jam
Oklahoma State's women's basketball team (3-1) will return to action this weekend when it begins play at the Junkanoo Jam in Freeport, Bahamas. OSU will open against Marist (2-1). The two teams are scheduled to tip at 2:30 p.m. (CST) on Friday. The winner will move on to Saturday's 7 p.m. championship game and will face either George Washington (2-1) or Michigan State (2-2). The third-place game will take place Saturday at 4:45 p.m.
Cowgirls and Budke in Tourney Play
The Cowgirls have had a good track record under head coach Kurt Budke in non-conference tournament action. In Budke's first season, the Cowgirls finished second at the UNM Thanksgiving Classic, losing to No. 25 New Mexico in the championship game. In 2006, OSU knocked off Columbia and Hawaii to win the Hawaii Invitational. Last season, the Cowgirls defeated Southern Miss and UNLV to win the Desert Draw in Las Vegas. The Cowgirls opened this season with a 3-1 record and as the runner-up to third-ranked Ohio State in the preseason WNIT.
OSU In The Bahamas
The Cowgirls have made two previous trips to the Bahamas, playing in the Nassau Sunsplash Shootout in 1996 and 2000. OSU went 1-1 in 1996 with a loss against LSU and a win over Richmond. OSU's last trip resulted in wins over Eastern Washington and Alabama.
OSU vs. The Field
OSU and its first-round opponent, Marist, have never met. Like the Cowgirls, the Red Foxes opened the year in the preseason WNIT, finishing 2-1. OSU lost, 60-58, to George Washington in 2001 during the first round of the Pepperdine Holiday Classic in their lone meeting. OSU and Michigan State have met three times with the Spartans winning twice. The Cowgirls won a triple overtime battle in the second round of the 1991 NCAA Tournament to advance to the Sweet 16. The squads defended their home turf in a home-and-home series that took place in 2002 and 2003.
