STILLWATER, Okla. - Behind a strong effort from preseason All-American Andrea Riley, Oklahoma State's women's basketball team opened the 2009-10 campaign with a 67-46 win over Washburn in exhibition play on Tuesday night in front of 2,352 fans inside Gallagher-Iba Arena.
"I think tonight is really what I expected. I didn't think we were going to come out and just light it up and remember every set and remember every defensive call," Cowgirl head coach Kurt Budke said.
"The one thing I think we did do tonight was play pretty good defense for 40 minutes. I thought we kept pretty good pressure on the basketball and the difference in the game was the 29 turnovers we forced tonight."
OSU caused 17 of Washburn's 29 turnovers in the first half while holding the Lady Blues to a 6-of-21 (28.6 percent) effort from the floor and just 18 points.
Riley scored nearly half of the squad's points in the period, pouring in 16 of the Cowgirls' 33 points. The Dallas, Texas native finished with a game-high 28 points on a 9-of-16 effort from the floor and an 8-of-10 performance from the free throw line.
The senior also paced both teams with four assists and three steals.
With eight players seeing their first Division I action, the Cowgirls' nerves settled offensively after the break. OSU shot 48 percent in the second half to improve to 9-0 all-time in exhibition contests under Budke.
Senior Tegan Cunningham joined Riley in double figures with 10 points and matched newcomer Precious Robinson with a team-high six rebounds.
OSU will open its regular season on Friday night in the first round of the preseason WNIT when it hosts Arkansas-Little Rock at 6 p.m.
