Cowgirl Tennis Begins Play at ITA Regionals

NORMAN, Okla. – The Oklahoma State women's tennis team began its competition at the 2009 Wilson/ITA Central Region Women's Championships Thursday, as Nataliya Shatkovskaya advanced to the round of 16 in the main draw singles bracket and Iryna Khatsko and Alisa Buslaieva teamed up to reach the round of 16 in the main draw doubles bracket.
Shatkovskaya reached the round of 16 after a pair of wins in straight sets in the round of 64 and the round of 32.
Buslaieva and Sasha Belova also won their matches in the opening round of main draw singles play, but were unable to advance in the following round.
In doubles play, Khatsko and Buslaieva had no problem in the opening round of 32, advancing with an 8-1 win over Drake's Amanda Aragon and Ali Patterson. The other two Cowgirl doubles teams fell in the first round as Shatkovskaya and Belova fell to Tulsa's Marta Marcinkowska and Rebecca Row, 8-5, and Alexandra Cristello and Leyla Simmons dropped their match against Oklahoma's Kristina Radan and Brittany Parks, 8-6.
"We had a tough day in doubles after making so many improvements this
fall,” coach Chris Young said. “We still have little room for error in so many areas and when we don't play well our weaknesses are exposed.
"I was very pleased with the way our girls responded in singles. I thought Sasha and Alisa competed extremely well and played as well as they have all fall. Nataliya continues to be our most consistent player and will be a tough match for any remaining player in the draw."
Simmons also competed in the qualifying singles draw of the tournament on Wednesday, but did advance to the main draw.
Oklahoma State returns to action on Friday, as Shatkovskaya faces Minnesota's Tijana Koprivica in the main draw singles bracket and Khatsko and Buslaieva go against Arkansas' Claudine Paulson and Anouk Tigu in main draw doubles play. Other Cowgirls resume play at the event in the consolation singles and doubles brackets.
