OSU vs. Colorado
January 15, 2009 | Cowgirl Basketball
OSU Head Coach Kurt Budke
“Tonight was a tremendous effort with our team. We didn't have two great days of practice leading up to this game. We did have our heads hanging from our loss against Iowa State. I don't know if it was being mad, angry, upset or whatever it was I thought our team was really lucky. We played really good defense tonight like we did at Iowa State and we carried it over tonight. It was just a good win and a good start in the Big 12.”
On OSU's transition game
“We're good when we are running. We're good when people are getting involved and when Andrea (Riley) is at her best. It's hard to keep a good pace in the Big 12 when other teams defenses are so good and other athletes are so good. But I thought Andrea did a great job distributing the basketball and this game was her career high in assists. I think it goes back to when you have five players go into double digits in scoring I think we're hard to beat. The fast break basketball is something we've got to get good at. I think that is part of our key to success this year.”
On OSU's rebounding effort
“I thought Shaunte' (Smith) did really well tonight. I thought she was relentless tonight. Last year I thought Shaunte' was one of the best rebounders night in and night out because she can move and be quick to get them and I really thought she did that well tonight. And it was good to see that going into Baylor this week.”
Sophomore Kristin Hernandez
On being more productive
“We took it as a challenge. Coach told us we had to rebound. He told us we needed to get more involved so we took it personally and got it done.”
On their transition game
“Running the floor is what our coach wanted. I think our defense creates offense so if we keep getting steals, rebounding it quick, getting open quick and finding that open man is key to a transition game.”
On the run they had during the end of the first half
“We got them tired, even in the second half we knew that they were trying to run us a little bit so we had to come out of the first half strong.”
Andrea Riley
About the win
“It felt great. It was a must win for us and it was a good game. Colorado came off a loss, which they took No. 5 Baylor to the wire. This was a team that was hot when they came in and we were ready for them.”
On her 12 assists
“I think it's running the floor more. When everybody is open and when their defense can't catch us. So therefore all we have to do is to push the ball. Go, go, go that's our offense right there. Once we get our transition game back we will start winning games and I think we really started that tonight.”
On Big 12 play
“I think it's a statement. First of all you have to protect your home floor in Big 12 play. Second of all you have to be ready for a team to come in, even though the team is from the North it doesn't mean anything. Every team is good in this conference.”
On Brittany Spears
“We had to pressure her. Shaunte' did a really good job tonight. Coach challenged her tonight and I think she really accomplished that. Spears is a good player. She can shoot and she can create off the dribble. So I think that Shaunte' made a difference on our offense tonight.”
Colorado Head Coach Kathy McConnell-Miller:
Regarding the run OSU made during the first half:
“I just thought they were exceptional at getting out. Andrea Riley is one of the quickest players I have seen at getting the ball to the rim and going
the length of the floor. I thought our transition defense left a lot to be desired. I credit them for getting to the rim and doing what they were doing, but we just could not respond.”
Regarding Brittany Spears only scoring 11 points and what slowed her down:
“I think Brittany took quick shots. I thought she settled for some shots, and as a result of that early on, it took her out of her game. She did not
have much success the first five to 10 minutes of the game and that kind of carried over. This game is considerably more physical than the
non-conference. She just has to respond to the differences between the non-conference and the Big 12.”
