Cowgirl Tennis Member Advances to Final of UNLV Fall Invitational

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (OSU Athletics) – Cowgirl tennis junior Nataliya Shatkovskaya advanced to the flight one finals of the UNLV Fall Invitational at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on Saturday.
The Minsk, Belarus, native defeated Missouri's Jessica Giuggioli in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. Cowgirl sophomore JoAnne Karaitiana struggled in here semifinal match against Jamie Mera, also of Missouri, falling 6-4, 7-6.
The Shatkovskaya/Karaitiana duo came up short in doubles against Kristina Nedeltcheva and Katy Williams of UNLV, 8-6.
Freshman Galina Semenova and senior Maryna Tkachenko roared past Missouri's Maureen Modesto/Sofia Ayala tandem with an 8-5 victory.
Semenova was forced to retire in her singles match with a nose bleed and a nagging elbow injury. Tkachenko defeated Anna Maskaljun of UNLV, 6-4, 6-4, to advance in the flight three semifinals.
“Nataliya [Shatkovskaya] played a very nice match today against stiff competition,” OSU head coach Julius Lubicz-Majewski said. “It is awfully hot here making it difficult to play. Tomorrow we will face tough competition in this heat, so we will just have to go out there and see what happens.”
Shatkovskaya faces UNLV's Kristina Nedeltcheva tomorrow in the finals match, Tkachenko will face Tanja Hrovatic of Iowa State in the flight three finals and Tkachenko and Semenova will continue their doubles campaign.
