Oleksandr Nedovyesov Garners No. 1 Spot In ITA Preseason Rankings

STILLWATER, Okla. Â Oklahoma State's Oleksandr Nedovyesov will enter the upcoming season as the top-ranked player in college tennis according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's preseason rankings.
Nedovyesov finished last year ranked second nationally and took over the top spot with the graduation of former No. 1 Somdev Devvarman of Virginia. The Cowboy junior finished the 2007-08 campaign with a 24-5 record at the No. 1 singles spot and helped OSU reach the round of 16 at the NCAA Championship.
The 2008 Big 12 Player of the Year, Nedovyesov is the first Cowboy to earn the top ranking since Pavel Kudrnac in 1998.
“It's exciting to have the No. 1 player in the country,” OSU head coach James Wadley said. “It's a challenge to him and a challenge to us.”
The Alushta, Ukraine native will also begin his junior campaign ranked in the top 10 nationally in doubles. Nedovyesov and Nathan Byrnes checked in at No. 10 in the ITA's doubles ranking. The tandem competed at the No. 1 spot last season for OSU and reached the doubles field at the NCAA Championship as well.
Nedovyesov started the fall season with a bang at the USTA Challenger of Oklahoma event in Tulsa. He defeated Dann Battistone and eighth-seeded Ryan Rowe in straight sets before eliminating No. 3 seed Raven Klaasen in the final qualifying match.
The Alushta, Ukraine, native continued his run by defeating Michael Yani in the first round. On Wednesday, he will face Sam Warburg, who is currently ranked No. 155 in the ATP rankings.
