August 27, 2008 | Cowgirl Basketball
STILLWATER, Okla. Richie Henderson has been elevated to the post of assistant coach on the Oklahoma State women's basketball staff it was announced today by Cowgirl head coach Kurt Budke.
“The main thing with Richie is he is an Oklahoma State graduate and was born and raised in Oklahoma,” Budke said. “Everyone in our community that knows him has great respect for him and realizes how bright he is. He is a rising star in the coaching business.”
“One of the keys to our success has been a strong chemistry between our staff and players and I expect Richie to step in and make an easy transition.”
Henderson fills the vacancy left by former assistant coach Kenya Larkin, who departed after a three-year stint in Stillwater for a position at LSU.
“I am excited for the opportunity to continue my coaching career at my alma mater with such an incredible coaching staff,” Henderson said. “Getting to work with talented, young athletes in the greatest basketball venue in the country is any coach's dream.”
“I feel it is a honor to be a part of the Cowgirl basketball program because Oklahoma State is an outstanding university in a great community with great fans.”
The Hartshorne, Okla., native joined the program last season as its graduate assistant after a three-year stop on the coaching staff at Stillwater High School.
Prior to joining the Cowgirl program, Henderson worked as the junior high basketball coordinator and taught physical education in the Stillwater public school system. He also served as the head basketball coach for the SHS freshman squad as well as an assistant for the Pioneers' varsity team.
From 2004-2006, Henderson worked as the head coach for the SHS sophomore squad and coordinated the Pioneer Basketball Camp for two seasons.
Henderson worked for the NFL's Buffalo Bills as an athletic training intern in 2005 and has also worked as a camp coach for the Oklahoma State men's basketball camps.
Henderson graduated from Oklahoma State in 2006 with a bachelor's degree in education. Prior to his arrival in Stillwater, he earned his associate of science degree from Eastern Oklahoma State College in 2003.
Henderson and his wife, Kristin, currently reside in Stillwater.
Filling Henderson's former position as graduate assistant will be Amber Metoyer, who played under Budke at Louisiana Tech.
“It is a privilege to join a program of this stature,” Metoyer said. “It is also a great opportunity to begin my coaching career under someone like coach Budke.”
Metoyer joins the program after spending time with the WNBA's Houston Comets last year. The Boulder, Colo., native competed at Colorado during her first two collegiate seasons, helping the Buffaloes to NCAA Tournament appearances in 2003 and 2004.
Metoyer closed out her career at Louisiana Tech where she guided the Lady Techsters to a pair of NCAA Tournament berths as well. She served as team captain for the 2006-07 season and was named to the Western Athletic Conference All-Defensive Team.
A standout in track and field as well, Metoyer finished third at the WAC Outdoor Championships in the heptathlon in 2005 and 2006. She also set the school's heptathlon record on two separate occasions.
