Cowgirl Basketball Announces Schedule For 2008-09 Season
August 13, 2008 | Cowgirl Basketball
STILLWATER, Okla. Â Oklahoma State's women's basketball team has announced its schedule for the 2008-09 season. Entering their fourth year under the direction of head coach Kurt Budke, the Cowgirls will play a 29-game slate that includes 17 games in Gallagher-Iba Arena.
Coming off one of the most successful campaigns in the program's history, OSU will vie for its third consecutive NCAA Tournament berth during the upcoming season. Last year, the Cowgirls tied the school's single-season record with 27 wins and reached the NCAA Sweet 16 for just the second time in program history.
OSU will face an early test in its season opener on Nov. 14 with a trip to Cameron Indoor Stadium for a showdown with Duke. The Blue Devils are one of nine NCAA Tournament teams from a year ago featured on the schedule.
“It will be exciting to open against Duke in one of the great arenas in the country,” Budke said. “We have upgraded our schedule every year and I think this is the toughest schedule we have had to this point.”
The Cowgirls' next three contests will take place in Gallagher-Iba Arena where they finished with a 14-3 mark last season and eclipsed the school's single-season mark for home victories. The trio of games will come against McNeese State, Arkansas Pine-Bluff and New Orleans to close out the month of November.
OSU will hit the road again for a Dec. 6 date at Arkansas-Little Rock before returning home to face TCU. The Cowgirls will look to avenge last season's road loss against the Horned Frogs on Dec. 14 before hosting in-state rival Oral Roberts two days later.
A mid-December trip to Las Vegas for the Desert Draw awaits the Cowgirls as well. OSU will square off with Southern Mississippi in Game One and then take on either UNLV or Cal State Northridge.
OSU will close out the non-conference portion of its schedule with a four-game stretch that includes contests with Eastern Kentucky, North Texas, Texas-Pan American and Centenary.
A road game against Iowa State on Jan. 10 will mark the start of conference play, while the Cowgirls' Big 12 home slate will get underway on Jan. 14 against Colorado.
“There are no off nights in the Big 12 and every game will be a battle,” Budke said. “Looking at our league schedule, I am reminded of the fact we play in the No. 1 RPI league in the country.”
After a road trip to Waco, Texas to take on Baylor on Jan. 17, OSU will host defending Big 12 champion Texas A&M on Jan. 24 before embarking on a two-game road swing with trips to Missouri and Texas Tech.
OSU's next three games will come at home against the likes of Texas, Oklahoma and Baylor on Feb. 5, 8 and 11, respectively.
Road games at Kansas State and Texas will precede home games against Texas Tech and Kansas before the Cowgirls head to Norman, Okla., for the second installment of the Bedlam Series against Oklahoma on Feb. 28.
OSU will close out the road schedule at Texas A&M on March 4 before returning home for a March 7 showdown against Nebraska on Senior Night.
