Former Cowboy Hoopster Passes Away

Born Sept. 24, 1936, in Stillwater to Clifford and Geneva Carberry, Roy grew up in Stillwater before moving to Guthrie just before his senior year in high school. He led Guthrie High School to the 1954 state championship. Carberry returned to Stillwater to attend Oklahoma A&M on a basketball scholarship for Henry Iba.
Carberry was a three-year letterman under Mr. Iba and was a starter his senior season, averaging 7.1 points and 3.9 rebounds per game. That year, the Aggies went 21-8 and advanced to the Regional Finals of the NCAA Tournament. The Pokes were ranked in the top 20 in both the Associated Press and the Coaches Poll. Carberry also played baseball and lettered in track his senior year.
He graduated in May of 1959 with a degree in mechanical and petroleum engineering and began his career with Conoco's Continental Pipeline Division in the engineering training program. He then joined the critical skills program of the U.S. Army and served at Fort Ord, Calif.
Carberry married Gayle Powell of Bartlesville on June 18, 1960. After several years of working for Conoco, he owned and operated the Texaco distributorship in Stillwater. In 1989, he purchased the Mail Boxes Etc. franchise for Oklahoma and began establishing stores throughout the state. He retired in 2002.
Carberry is survived by his wife, his son, Steve, and his children, Tanner and Mia; his daughter, Linda Yarlagadda and her husband, Ryan, along with their son Matthew; his sister, Bonnie Daley; his brother, Sterling.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, August 1, at First Christian Church (411 W. Mathews in Stillwater) with the Rev. Owen Cayton, the Rev. M. Rick Hendricks and the Rev. Bill Master officiating.
