Nedovyesov Reaches Round Of 16 At NCAA Championship
May 23, 2008 | Cowboy Tennis
Nedovyesov, who was named the ITA National Player To Watch yesterday, defeated Brett Helgeson of Notre Dame in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. With the victory, the Alushta, Ukraine, native became the first Cowboy to reach the round of 16 since Pavel Kudrnac made the quarterfinals in 1998.
“Oleksandr was down a break early, but stayed in and served really well today,” OSU head coach James Wadley said. “It was tight early, but he got on his game and played a good, solid match. We are happy he can move on and get ready for the next day.”
The No. 3 seed in the tournament, Nedovyesov moved to 26-6 on the season with his win and will take on Pepperdine's Andre Begemann on Friday. The match time has yet to be determined.
Nedovyesov and Begemann met last October during the quarterfinals of the Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Tournament in Tulsa, with Nedovyesov prevailing, 6-3, 6-2.
In doubles action on Thursday, Nedovyesov and junior Nathan Byrnes took on fourth-seeded Jonas Berg and Erling Tveit of Mississippi.
The OSU tandem, which defeated Berg and Tveit earlier this year, saw its season come to an end in three sets, 1-6, 6-3, 1-6.
