April 27, 2008 | Cowgirl Golf
STILLWATER, Okla. ÂFor the second consecutive day, Oklahoma State's women's golf team built on its lead and cruised to a 27-shot victory on Sunday at the Big 12 Championship at Karsten Creek in Stillwater, giving them their first league title under head coach Laura Matthews.
The Cowgirls finished with a 48-over 912 team total after carding a 307 score in cold and windy conditions on the par-72, 6,210-yard layout. Texas A&M finished as the event's runner-up, coming in at 939, while Texas finished third at 958.
The win gave OSU its league-leading sixth Big 12 title. The Cowgirls also won the event in 1999, 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2005.
“We are really excited and I am very proud of the girls,” Matthews said. “I am proud of the way they played and the way they represented Oklahoma State. They played well this week and took care of business.”
The winning margin was the largest in tournament history, shattering the previous best by 16 strokes. The Cowgirls also became the first team to produce a 1-2-3 finish in the individual race.
Sweeney, who joined the program in January, led wire-to-wire on her way to her first collegiate victory. She also became the sixth Cowgirl to win the event and the first freshman in conference history to take medalist honors
“It feels great. This was my goal coming into this tournament and I have spent a lot of time on this course and on the greens especially,” Sweeney said. “I wanted to win and I wanted our team to win. I was in this position in my second tournament that I played (a runner-up finish at the Wildcat Invitational) and I took a lot from that. We won the Big 12 and I got my first win, so I am really excited.”
The Andover, Mass., native finished with a 77 on Sunday, giving her a 9-over 225 total and a four-shot victory over teammate Karin Kinnerud. The victory was the first by a Cowgirl this season and marked her third consecutive top 10.
For Kinnerud, the runner-up showing was the second of her career and marked the second time this season she has finished in the top five. The Cowgirl junior carded a 77 during her final round for a 229 total on her way to her second-straight Big 12 top-10 showing.
Fellow junior Amanda Johnson fired the low round of the day with a 4-over 76 to finish at 230 and in sole possession of third place. The finish was the best of her career and was her second consecutive top-10 conference finish.
Tammy Clelland, OSU's lone senior, carded her low round of the event on Sunday with a 5-over 77 to finish at 235 and tied for sixth place. The finish was the third time she has finished among the top 10 this season.
Junior Pernilla Lindberg rounded out the starting lineup with a 238 total to tie for 12th place after carding an 85 during her third round.
OSU will be back in action on May 8 when it begins NCAA Regional competition. The Cowgirls will find out their postseason destination on Monday.
