Cowboys Upended by Bears at Home
April 12, 2008 | Cowboy Tennis
Baylor avenged a 4-2 defeat to the Cowboys at the ITA Indoor Championships back on Feb. 15 to give OSU its first loss in
“There is a reason they are the defending conference champs,” said Cowboy head coach James Wadley. “We played well enough to beat them back at the ITA Indoor Championships, and they obviously came in here with a lot of motivation stemming from that loss.
In doubles play, OSU suffered quick losses at No. 2 and No. 3, giving Baylor the doubles point, but the Cowboys' 20th-ranked duo of Oleksandr Nedovyesov and Nathan Byrnes fought hard to earn an 8-5 victory over No. 44 David Galic and Denes Lukacs.
The Pokes battled in singles play, but the Bears picked up five of the six points. Sophomore Dmytro Petrov picked up OSU's lone point with a 6-3, 6-3, win over Galic at No. 3.
Nedovyesov and Puchkarov each suffered heartbreakers at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively. Eighth-ranked Nedovyesov fell to No. 20 Lars Poershke, 6-7 (7), 3-6, 0-1 (8). Meanwhile, No. 10 Denes Lukacs survived an upset scare from No. 54 Puchkarov as Lukacs took the match, 6-2, 6-7, 1-0(6).
“I thought our guys fought hard today,” said Wadley. “Our top three singles guys played really well, and I was proud of the way Nathan and Oleksandr played in doubles to stay undefeated in conference play. This is a very tough team that we lost to.”
