Puchkarov Leads Pokes in Win Over SMU

STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State's men's tennis team captured a 5-2 win over SMU behind a strong performance from senior Ivan Puchkarov on Wednesday.
In No. 2 doubles action, Puchkarov and sophomore Dmytro Petrov dominated their way to an 8-5 win over SMU's David Kuczer and Adham el-Effendi. At No. 3 doubles, the freshmen duo of Mark Kepler and Anton Bobytskyi picked up their first doubles win as they defeated SMU's Oivind Alver and Chris Hooshyar, 8-4, giving OSU the doubles point.
Puchkarov was also strong in No. 2 singles play as he defeated the Mustangs' David Kuczer, 6-2, 6-3, in straight sets. Junior Nathan Byrnes picked up a 6-2, 6-3, win over Hooshyar, and sophomore Oleksandr Nedovyesov put the match away with a hard-fought, 6-2, 6-3, win over SMU's Robin Fahgen.
With the match already decided, Bobytskyi and Kepler each went to the tie break in their respective matches. Bobytskyi came out on top at No. 6, winning his match, 6-7, 6-2, 10-7. At No. 4, Kepler fought hard, but fell 6-2, 5-6, 8-10.
“I am very proud of the way our guys played, despite the bad conditions,” said Cowboy head coach James Wadley. “It was cold and windy, but our guys fought hard. I thought Ivan had a great day. I was proud of the way Nathan bounced back in singles after a tough doubles match, and I was extremely pleased with our two freshmen picking up their first win at No. 3 doubles.”
The Cowboys (7-4, #15) will be back in action tomorrow as they take on the Memphis Tigers. The 2 p.m. match is scheduled to be played at the DeBois Tennis Complex, but in the event of inclement weather, it will be played at Tulsa's Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
