OSU vs. Baylor Postgame Quotes
February 06, 2008 | Cowgirl Basketball
OSU Head Coach Kurt Budke
On the game
“I'll just start out by saying that I am very proud of my team. I thought we really came and competed tonight. I think you have to do that against Baylor, because nobody's team in America plays harder than Kim Mulkey's team. She is one of the top coaches in this nation, there is no doubt about that. Her teams compete from start to finish."
“We challenged our girls, in the short period of time that we had to turn around and play this game, that if we don't come into this game and play a hard -nosed style tonight, that we were going to get beat. I thought you saw tonight that we played a hard-nosed, tough style. I am very proud of my post players tonight. I am very proud that we had five players in double figures tonight. This is a great win for our program.”
On the matchup between Andrea Riley and Angela Tisdale
“You saw two great point guards tonight each struggle in the first half. Maybe that is the way it should be, because they are two of the best point guards in this nation. If that would have happened a month ago, or two months ago, we would have really struggled, but we had some people step up. Kristin Hernandez was really big for us, because we had Danielle Greene on the bench with foul trouble and Andrea Riley struggling, and you have someone like Kristin step up and come through for us. She's coming around now. She is a freshman, she is still learning and she is still maturing, but you saw tonight her potential to really be a great player at Oklahoma State.”
Senior Maria Cordero
On the win
“I think that this is (bigger than the win over Oklahoma). (Baylor) is a great team and for us to come out so focused - the coaches had a great game plan and we just executed very well - this is a great win.
On the tough play of her team
“I feel like it has paid off from practice, because we have been battling against each other down low a lot lately. So I think it has to do a lot with practice and who we battle against. I think that is another reason Kristin Hernandez is so good, because she is battling against Danielle Greene every single day at practice. I think that is making her a better player. For a freshman to step up like she did, that is just huge.”
Freshman Kristin Hernandez
On playing with a lot of emotion tonight
“I think it is because it is Baylor. When you are playing the No. 5 team in the nation, there is always more adrenaline. When you are doing the right things and executing well, that happens.”
On stepping up in such a big game
“When I come in the game, I feel like I have to go in, get a rebound, and get myself warmed up. Right when Coach (Budke) called my name, I felt myself get a butterfly in my stomach. That let me know I was ready, but I felt like I needed to go in, get the butterfly out, and I felt warmed up as soon as I got a rebound. I get the ball in my hand and I feel like I am warmed up.”
Baylor Head Coach Kim Mulkey
On the game
“They play with a lot of emotion in this building. They're a different basketball team when they play here. It's a great atmosphere. They're very physical. It means something to them to play on their home floor. I thought we hung in there with them for a while. We got in a little foul trouble and they went on a run there.”
On Player's injury
Her absence affected the depleted bench when we got into foul trouble. But it didn't affect the play. Melissa (Jones) almost had a double-double. The difference in the game tonight was that our post play was non-existent. Our post players shot like seven times among the three of them. They hid against the zone. The shots they did have they didn't make and they should have. They got man-handled physically in rebounding. I thought that was the difference in the game.”
On Andrea Riley
“Riley was not the difference in the game tonight. I thought we did a really good job on Riley. It was all the other players. When you have a kid that shot the ball 23 times and only made five shots, she didn't beat you. Look at what the other ones did. ”
Senior Angela Tisdale
“They just beat us tonight. We were getting back in it but they kept getting put-backs and rebounds. Every time we tried to shoot it, they got a rebound.”
Junior Jessica Morrow
“I feel like, personally on my part, I did a lot of things wrong. I didn't help my team defensively or on rebounds. With Jhasmin (Player) going down I knew I had to step up with the rebounding and I didn't. I feel like I failed my team in that area and on the defensive end.”
