Cowboys Battle Hard; Fall to UCLA
February 18, 2008 | Cowboy Tennis
In doubles action, senior Ivan Puchkarov and sophomore Dmytro Petrov were leading, 7-6, over UCLA's Mathieu Dehaine and Holden Seguso, but their efforts came up short as the Bruins picked up wins at No.1 and No. 3 to secure the doubles point.
In singles play, Cowboy sophomore Oleksandr Nedovyesov continued to play well as he defeated UCLA's Harel Srugo, 7-5, 6-1. That evened the score of the match, 1-1, before UCLA's Jeremy Drean won, 6-4, 6-4, over OSU freshman Mark Kepler to put the Bruins up 2-1.
After the two teams traded a few more blows in singles, it came down to a battle of two freshmen at No. 6 singles with the score tied at 3-3. OSU's Anton Bobystkyi took the first set, 4-6, but it was all UCLA from that point as Bruin freshman Nick Meister won the final two sets, 6-2, 6-0, to secure the win for UCLA.
Cowboy head coach James Wadley said he was very proud of his team's effort and that his players got some great experience at the tournament.
“I thought our guys fought hard today,” said Wadley. “UCLA is a very strong program, and we played them down to the final set. We have a lot of young guys who got some great experience out here.”
OSU will be back in action next Sunday, Feb 23, as they take on Texas Christian in
