November 05, 2008 | Cowboy Tennis
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. Â Top-ranked Oleksandr Nedovyesov headlines the field of the 2008 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships which begins Thursday morning from the University of Virginia's Boar's Head Sports Club.
The tournament is the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's second of three singles and doubles national tournaments for the 2008-09 tennis season, which will feature the top men's and women's tennis players in the country.
As the nation's top player, Nedovyesov earned a number one seed in the singles bracket. The 2008 D'Novo/ITA All-American Championship runner-up has accumulated 11 wins this fall and his lone loss came in the All-American Championship.
He and Cowboy teammate Nathan Byrnes will also participate in the tournament's doubles draw. The duo is the 10th-ranked tandem in the country.
Byrnes and Nedovyesov are one of 16 doubles teams competing in the tournament, while Nedovyesov is a part of a 32-player singles field. Throughout the process of qualifying for this championship, more than 10,000 players from almost 600 schools competed in hopes of advancing to the finals.
“It's a great challenge having the 32 best singles players in the nation, as well as the best 16 doubles teams,” OSU coach James Wadley said. “It really is quite an honor to be here.”
The Boar's Head Sports Club is considered one of the top 50 tennis resorts in the U.S. and one of the top 75 in the world. The tournament will be competed on the club's 12 state-of-the-art indoor tennis courts.
Competition in men's singles and doubles is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. on Thursday.
