November 02, 2008 | Cowgirl Basketball
STILLWATER, Okla. ÂOklahoma State's women's basketball team will begin the 2008-09 season ranked No. 14 in the preseason Associated Press Top 25 poll, which was released on Saturday.
The ranking marks the first time the Cowgirls have been ranked in the AP preseason poll after having received votes in last year's preseason poll. OSU entered the top 25 in Week Three last year and finished the year with the highest ranking in program history, checking in at No. 13.
OSU returns three starters, including All-America candidate Andrea Riley, and eight letterwinners from last year's squad that finished 27-8 and reached the NCAA Sweet 16.
The Cowgirls are one of five Big 12 teams featured in the poll, joining Oklahoma (No. 4), Texas A&M (No. 11), Texas (No. 13) and Baylor (No. 19). Iowa State and Kansas State also received votes.
Connecticut garnered 44 of the 45 possible first-place votes to earn the No. 1 spot. Stanford received the other first-place vote and is ranked second.
OSU will tip off the season in Stillwater on Tuesday at 7 p.m. against East Central in the first of its two exhibition contests.
