Over the last several days, OSU senior golfer Pernilla Lindberg shared her account of the 2008 World Amateur Team Championship in Australia. Lindberg was one of two Cowgirls representing the Swedish team and one of five OSU players overall in the event. Below is her final entry.
Hello everybody!
The Championship is over and I am back in Stillwater, jet-lagged but happy! We finished the tournament Saturday afternoon (local time), and we could not have asked for a much better finish! Sweden won by 12 shots, Spain finished second, and the U.S third.
The Swedish team was in the lead from Day One, and I guess we did make it too exciting the last day, since we were still leading by 11 shots with 9 holes to go. Even though we had a big lead, we all felt that we could not really relax until the last hole was played. But then we could celebrate!!
Caroline was the last one to finish and after she had signed her scorecard it was time for photos, interviews, photos, and some more photos! We posed with the trophy and with the Swedish flag! Everyone asked us how it felt to be world champions and it was hard to describe. I think I might understand it better in a few days!
We knew we had a really good team going into this tournament, but playing with expectations and the lead is not always easy to manage. So, I am of course extremely happy that we finished it off the way we did. It was a great experience for us, and it also proves that Swedish golf is extremely strong. Amateur golf usually does not get much attention in media in Sweden, but from what I have heard, our victory has been covered in all the bigger newspapers.
After everything was over on the golf course on Saturday, we had a big closing ceremony and gala dinner Saturday evening. All teams, both men's and women's, were there and we had a great time. Since our ride to the airport showed up at 6 a.m. Sunday morning, we did not really get as much sleep as we needed the last night though, but we had time to catch up on sleep during the 29-hour long trip back!
Now it is time for us to catch up on some schoolwork! But already on Wednesday it is time to head to the next tournament, this time to play for and represent the Cowgirls!
