Cowgirls Prevail Again In Overtime
October 12, 2008 | Cowgirl Soccer
STILLWATER, Okla. Â For the second-straight match, Oklahoma State earned a 3-2 come-from-behind win in overtime as the 12th-ranked Cowgirls knocked off No. 16 Missouri Sunday afternoon at the Cowgirl Soccer Complex.
Sophomore Katie Richardson scored her first-ever goal in Big 12 Conference competition just 1:27 into overtime to lift OSU to the win as the Cowgirls improved to 12-1-1 overall and 3-1-1 in Big 12 play.
“It's probably one of the most clutch goals I've ever hit,” said Richardson, whose goal was her fifth of the season. “This team has the most heart of any team in the Big 12. At halftime, we knew that whoever scored the first goal (of the second half) would decide the outcome of the game, and we decided that would be us.”
Missouri (9-4-0, 4-2-0) controlled the opening half of play, scoring a pair of goals in the game's first 15 minutes and taking a 2-0 lead at intermission.
In the 13th minute, Alysha Bonnick scored from 12 yards out off an assist from Kristin Andrighetto. Just over two minutes later, Andrighetto netted a goal of her own as her shot went off the hands of a leaping Erin Stigler and found the back of the net.
Mizzou was the aggressor offensively in the opening half, but that changed after intermission. In the final half, OSU outshot the Tigers by a 14-6 margin.
That offensive intensity paid off in the 55th minute when Yolanda Odenyo dribbled through the Mizzou defense and sent a perfect pass to Siera Strawser in the box. Strawser finished with her sixth goal of the season to trim the Cowgirls' deficit to 2-1.
OSU would tie the score in the 71st minute. This time it was Annika Niemeier outworking several defenders and sending a pass to Odenyo in the box, where the Cowgirls' senior All-American provided the equalizer with her 11th goal of the season.
In the overtime period, the Cowgirls capitalized in a hurry. Just seconds into the 92nd minute of action, OSU defender Jessica Jarrell won the ball near midfield and played it forward to Richardson. And the Broken Arrow, Okla. native did the rest, weaving through the defense and blasting a shot to the far post past MU goalie Tasha Dittamore.
“It's a credit to our girls for fighting like crazy and working their socks off for this win,” said OSU head coach Colin Carmichael. “Missouri is a great team, and we knew it would be tough. For us to win was big  this keeps us in line for winning a regular season championship in the Big 12.”
OSU returns to conference action this weekend when the Cowgirls face road tests at Baylor (Fri.) and Texas (Sun.).
