Former Oklahoma State golfer Linda Wessberg was chosen as one of three wild card selections for the European Solheim Cup squad it was announced today.
A native of Gothenburg, Sweden, Wessberg was tabbed along with Maria Hjorth and Iben Tinning to round out captain Helen Alfredsson's 12-player squad. The selection was the first for Wessberg, who joined the Ladies European Tour in 2003.
After picking up her first career victory in 2006 at the Wales Ladies Championship of Europe, Wessberg has carried her success into the 2007 season, earning her second career win at the Vediorbis Open de France in June. She also has a runner-up finish to her credit, placing second at the Golf Punk Ladies English Open and tied for seventh earlier this month at the Ricoh Women's British Open.
The Solheim Cup is the most prestigious team event in women's professional golf. The match-play event is held biennially and features 12 of the top European-born players from the LET and 12 of the top American-born players from the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA).
This year's tournament will be held at Halmstad Golf Club in Sweden and will take place Sept. 14-16.
