Cowgirl Golfers Compete at NCAA Championships
May 23, 2007 | Cowgirl Golf
“We struggled out there today,” said OSU head coach Laura Matthews. “We had two great practice rounds (on Sunday and Monday), but for whatever reason, we didn't put it together today. It was a little windy during those two days as well, but nothing like it was today. The thing is, the wind shouldn't affect us. We play in wind all the time. We just didn't play well.”
The Cowgirls started out poorly, with all five golfers scoring a bogey or worse on the No. 1 hole. Through the front nine, OSU was a combined 23 over par. Freshman Sarah Bradley was 11-over through the first eight holes, but was able to stick with it and shot three-under over the final 10 holes.
“Sarah struggled all around on the front nine, but played great on the back nine,” said Coach Matthews. “I was obviously very proud of her for pulling it together on the last 10 holes.”
The top golfer of the day for Oklahoma State was sophomore Karin Kinnerud, who was extremely solid excluding one hole, the par-five No. 14. The Sweden native was one under on the other 17 holes, but carded a nine on No. 14 for a three-over 75 on the day.
“I struck the ball really well today,” said Kinnerud. “This is the best I've played the whole season. I had one hole that was bad. Overall, this course fits my game well. It isn't extremely long, and usually, putting is my strength. My putting has been very good for most of the season, but the last couple of tournaments, I haven't putted great. I didn't putt very well today.”
Pernilla Lindberg, OSU's top golfer, started the day with a double bogey on No. 1 before settling down. She was even over the next 12 holes before a lost ball on No. 14 cost her another double bogey. A bogey on 18 gave the Cowgirl sophomore a five-over 77.
Amanda Johnson, a Jenks, Okla., native, never blew up on a hole, carding 10 pars and eight bogeys for an 80, tying Bradley. Cowgirl senior Mallorie Underwood was even over the final four holes and finished with an 82.
The tournament will continue with 18 holes played each day over the next three days.
