May 22, 2007 | Cowboy Tennis
Oklahoma State tennis standouts Oleksandr Nedovyesov and Ivan Puchkarov will be two of 64 individuals competing for the 2007 NCAA Singles Championship when the tournament starts Wednesday in Athens, Ga.
The Cowboys are the only Big 12 school to have multiple competitors in the event. Both Nedovyesov and Puchkarov are making their first appearance at the championship.
Nedovyesov, a freshman, will face UNC Charlotte's Roy Sichel in the first round at 8 a.m. The winner of the match will advance to face the winner of the Sheeba Parbhu (Notre Dame) and second-ranked Somdev Devvarman (Virginia) match Thursday.
Nedovyesov is currently ranked No. 23 and has an 18-5 record this season. The Ukraine native has been one of the most honored Cowboys in recent years as he has been named the Big 12's Freshman and Newcomer of the Year, All-Big 12 in singles and doubles, as well as the Central Region's Rookie of the Year and Player to Watch.
Puchkarov, a junior, will meet USC's Jamil Al-Agba Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. The winner of the match will go against the winner of the Lars Poerschke (Baylor) and Daniel Vallverdu (Miami, Fla.) match Thursday.
Puchkarov, ranked No. 30, has won 27 matches this school year and has been ranked as high as No. 3. He was a unanimous All-Big 12 selection this season.
