May 18, 2007 | Cowboy Tennis
Oklahoma State's eighth-ranked men's tennis team had its season ended by No. 9 UCLA, 4-0, in the NCAA round of 16 Thursday in Athens, Ga.
The Bruins grabbed the early momentum by nabbing the ever-crucial doubles point with wins at No. 1 and 2 doubles.
UCLA stretched its advantage to 2-0 with a rare loss by Artie Burmistrau at No. 5 singles. The senior has been one of head coach James Wadley's most consistent performers during his three-year career but on Thursday Mathieu Dehaine was too much as he defeated the Cowboy in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1.
At No. 3 singles, another OSU senior played his last match as a Cowboys as Daniel Byrnes, an All-American last season, lost to Phillip Gruendler in a tough match, 6-4, 7-5.
UCLA clinched the match at No. 6 singles where sophomore Nathan Byrnes was beaten by Michael Look, 7-5, 6-3.
The matches at No. 1, 2 and 4 singles went unfinished.
While the Cowboys' season is over, Oleksandr Nedovyesov and Ivan Puchkarov are set to compete for an individual national title as both have been selected to compete in the NCAA Singles Championship, May 23-28 in Athens.
