Wadley and Nedovyesov Win Regional Awards
May 14, 2007 | Cowboy Tennis
Oklahoma State men's tennis coach James Wadley and freshman Oleksandr Nedovyesov were each honored by the Central Region for their outstanding 2007 seasons, it was announced Monday.
Wadley was named the region's coach of the year for guiding the Cowboys to a 19-4 record so far. The Cowboys hosted a regional for the third-straight season and defeated in-state rival Oklahoma, 4-0, Sunday to advance to the NCAA round of 16 for the first time since 2003.
The Cowboys achieved the highest ranking in school history this season (seventh) and entered the NCAA Tournament as their highest seed to date (eighth). On March 8, OSU defeated Penn in Stillwater to give Wadley his 600th career victory. Wadley has spent his entire 35-year coaching career at the head of the OSU program and has also been named the Central Region Coach of the Year in 2001, 2003 and 2005. He was also named the Big 12's Co-Coach of the Year this season.
Nedovyesov also continues to pile up honors as the Central Region named him this season's Rookie of the Year and Player to Watch. The Ukraine native has gone 18-5 this season at No. 1 singles and is currently ranked No. 23 nationally. He has defeated 14 ranked opponents this season and has also been named the Big 12's Freshman and Newcomer of the Year.
Yevgen Bondarchuk was last season's Central Region Assistant Coach of the Year, but was ineligible for this season's honor since he won last year.
The Cowboys will continue their season Thursday when they play No. 9 UCLA at 6 pm., in Athens, Ga., for the right to advance to the round of 8.
