Holcomb Joins Cowboy Basketball Radio Broadcast
May 10, 2007 | Cowboy Basketball
“I am truly excited about this opportunity,” Holcomb said. “OSU Basketball has enjoyed a place among the nation's elite programs for years now, and the broadcast tradition has been second to none. To top it off, there's the excitement of calling games in the ÂRowdiest Arena in the Country' at Gallagher-Iba Arena.”
Holcomb has served as the color analyst for OSU football radio broacasts the past two seasons. He has been a part of the OSU family since 2001, when he started handling the play-by-play duties for locally televised basketball games on the Cowboy Sports Network.
“Coaches Eddie and Sean Sutton and the rest of the OSU Basketball family took a chance on me six years ago because I hadn't called any basketball games in about 10 years,” said Holcomb. “But from day one, they made me feel at home. I can't wait to get to work with Dave Hunziker, Joe Riddle and the rest of the crew.”
A graduate of Oklahoma Baptist University, Holcomb played basketball two years for the OBU Bison. He began his broadcasting career at KGFF-AM in Shawnee and served as the play-by-play man for OBU basketball radio broadcasts during the 1988-89 season.
“I'm certainly looking forward to having John join our radio broadcast team,” said OSU head basketball coach Sean Sutton. “He and I have a very good relationship, both professionally and personally. He is the consummate professional, dedicated to providing fair and unbiased coverage of sports in Oklahoma. He is certainly one of the top sports directors in this region of the country.”
Holcomb moved to Sherman, Texas, in 1989 and was a weekend news anchor and news reporter at KXII-TV (CBS affiliate) for two years. He then joined the staff at KSWO-TV (ABC affiliate) in Lawton as the weekend sports anchor and served in that position until 1993.
Following a two-year stint as the sports director at KFDA-TV (CBS affiliate) in Amarillo, Texas, Holcomb returned to Oklahoma in November of 1995 and joined the crew at KOTV. He was promoted to sports director in October of 1999, and has been a co-host of the ÂOklahoma Sports Blitz', a Sunday night sports show broadcast statewide, since August of 2001.
