“I'm really excited with Brad's decision to join our program,” said Sutton. “He is a terrific young man and I can't wait to have the opportunity to coach him. He is a great shooter, but is also very athletic. I think he will make an immediate impact on next year's team. His experience will be a major asset for our program. He's been very well coached and comes from one of the premier junior college programs in the country. This is an exciting day for me and for OSU Basketball.”
Garrett averaged 15.8 points and 5.3 rebounds per game last season for CSI. He was the leading scorer on a team that led the country in offensive output at 105.7 points per contest. A long-range specialist, Garrett connected on 100-of-242 shots from beyond the three-point arc, a 41.3 shooting percentage. He shot 72.7 percent from the free-throw line and 45.6 percent from the floor.
“I thought about it a lot and I just felt like Oklahoma State was the right place for me,” said Garrett. “I fit in really well in their system. I definitely liked the coaching staff. When I went out there on my visit, I felt good about myself being there and I could see myself playing in that program.”
“Without a doubt, it was the relationship I forged with Coach Sutton, especially over the last two weeks, that convinced me that OSU is the place for me,” Garrett added. “I really enjoyed getting to know Coach Sutton better and look forward to playing for him. He's a really cool guy to talk to and he makes you feel comfortable. Plus, OSU's a great place to be.”
A first-team All-Region 18 selection, Garrett paced the Golden Eagles through the National Junior College Athletic Association national tournament, garnering all-tournament honors. He was also named Most Valuable Player of the regional tournament. CSI finished fourth nationally, falling to eventual national runner-up Chipola College, 96-90, in the semifinals. The Golden Eagles lost 91-86 to Coffeyville Community College in the third-place game.
“He's probably the best junior college shooter in America,” said CSI assistant coach Jeff Renegar. “Not just from three-point range but from 3-4 feet behind the line. He's not just a shoot and catch guy, either. He's very athletic and can play above the rim. During games, we would give him lobs and he'd throw them down with both hands. He needs to work on putting the ball on the floor. He's a catch and shoot guy first. I know Brooks (Thompson) and Randy (Rutherford) well, and know what kind of shooters they were. Brad will be one of the best shooters to ever come through OSU.”
A 6-foot-5, 195-pound guard, Garrett is originally from Pine View High School in St. George, Utah. He chose the Cowboys after receiving offers from Kansas, BYU, USC, Oregon and several other Division I schools.
