Cowgirls to Compete in Big 12 Championships
Oklahoma States Cowgirl Golf team will travel to Waco, Texas, to compete in the 11th annual Big 12 Championships, hosted by the Baylor University. The tournament will be held at the Ridgewood Country Club on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, April 16-18, with a practice round on Sunday, April 15. OSU will look to win its sixth league title in nine years after having won the 2005 tournament by one stroke over Texas on the Longhorns home course, the 2003 tournament by one stroke over Missouri, the 2002 championship by three strokes over Oklahoma, the 2001 title by six strokes over runnerup Texas and the 1999 championship by two strokes over Texas. Oklahoma State has won five of the 10 Big 12 Championships, and has won 19 conference titles in all. The Cowgirls will compete on Monday with Texas and Baylor off hole No. 10. The tournament will begin with split tees at 9 a.m. Monday and Tuesday and at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday.
Oklahoma State at the Big 12 Championships
Oklahoma States womens golf team has finished in the top five in all 10 previous Big 12 Championships, including victories in 1999, 2001-03 and in 2005. In four of the five years that OSU won the team title, a Cowgirl won individual medalist honors as well. In both 1999 and 2001, Maria Bodén won the individual title and, in 2002, Emma Zackrisson took home the individual trophy. Annie Thurman-Young was the individual medalist in 2004 and 2005.
History of Big 12 Championships
Oklahoma State has won half of the Big 12s league titles in its first 10 years of existence. OSU has dominated the Big 12 Conference in womens golf. When the Big 12 was formed, it took two seasons before the Cowgirls were once again the top team in the league. OSU won its first Big 12 title in 1999, and rattled off three-straight wins from 2001-03. Oklahoma States most recent conference title came in 2005 when the Cowgirls defeated the Texas Longhorns by one stroke on their home course.
2006 Big 12 Championships Recap
Oklahoma State took a three-stroke lead into the final round, but Texas A&M surged on the final day and defeated the Cowgirls by 11 strokes. Candie Herrera paced OSU with a fifth-place finish while Pernilla Lindberg and Jennifer Karr also both finished in the top 10, garnering all-tournament honors. Karin Kinnerud and Mallorie Underwood both finished in the top 20 as well. The Cowgirls finished 12 strokes ahead of third-place Colorado. It marked Oklahoma States ninth-consecutive top-three finish.
Four Cowgirls Named Academic All-Big 12
Oklahoma State had four golfers named to the Academic All-Big 12 first team, tying for the most by any school this season. Sophomores Amanda Johnson and Karin Kinnerud both qualified with perfect 4.0 grade point averages, while senior Mallorie Underwood and sophomore Pernilla Lindberg both made the first team with 3.2 or better GPAs.
Cowgirls Rank High in the Big 12
Based on the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Ratings Index, the Cowgirls rank among the best in the Big 12 individually. OSU has four golfers among the top seven in the Big 12. Pernilla Lindberg and Karin Kinnerud rank second and third, respectively, while Sarah Bradley and Mallorie Underwood rank sixth and seventh, respectively. Candie Herrera and Amanda Johnson are both among the top 15.
History at the Conference Championships
In the 32-year history of the Big Eight/Big 12 Championships, Oklahoma State has won the team title an impressive 19 times, including six consecutive from 1984-89. Twenty Cowgirls have won individual medalist honors, including nine consecutive from 1982-90. Excluding the inaugural season of each league (1976 for the Big Eight, 1997 for the Big 12), OSU has never finished lower than third place, and has finished either as champion or runnerup on 26 occasions.
OSU vs. the Field
Oklahoma State is a 16-2 overall vs. the Big 12 opponents in head-to-head competition this season. OSU is 4-0 vs. Missouri, and 2-0 against Iowa State, Oklahoma and Texas. The Cowgirls are 1-0 against Kansas State and Texas Tech. The only team that has beaten OSU from the Big 12 this season is Texas A&M, against which the Cowgirls are 4-2. Over the last six years, Oklahoma State is an impressive 202-25-1 (88.8 percent) vs. the Big 12 Conference. That includes a 46-7 mark in 2000-01, a 35-7 record in 2001-02, a 22-3 mark in 2002-03, a 16-3-1 record in 2003-04, a 30-0 mark in 2004-05 and a 37-3 record last season.
OSU Schedule Strength Ranks in Top 10
Based on the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Ratings Index, Oklahoma States schedule this season is the ninth-toughest in the nation. Thats the top schedule in the Big 12. USC and UCLA of the Pac 10 hold the top-two spots. In fact, the Pac 10 has three of the top-five schedule strengths. Texas A&M has the second-best schedule strength in the Big 12 at 17th while Texas is third at 28th.
On the Schedule Next for Oklahoma State
Oklahoma State will compete in one of three NCAA Regional sites, May 10-12. A total of 21 teams and three individuals will be selected to compete at each regional. The three regional sites are: East Regional LSU Golf Course, Baton Rouge, La.; Central Regional University of Michigan Golf Course, Ann Arbor, Mich.; West Regional Snow Canyon Country Club, St. George, Utah. The top eight teams and top two individuals not affiliated with those eight teams at each regional site will advance to the NCAA Championships. The national championship event will be held at the LPGA International Course in Daytona Beach, Fla., May 22-25.
OSU to Host League Tournament in 2008
Oklahoma State will host the 2008 Big 12 Womens Golf Championships at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Okla. The dates are set for April 25-27, 2008.
