Destanie Sykes Named Arthur Ashe Sports Scholar

Oklahoma State women's basketball player Destanie Sykes has been named a 2007 Arthur Ashe Sports Scholar it was announced by Diverse: Issues in Higher Education.
A senior for the Cowgirls this past season, Sykes played in 23 games while helping OSU to a 20-11 record and its first NCAA Tournament berth since 1996.
A native of Duncanville, Texas, Sykes was named a first-team Academic All-Big 12 pick three times during her career. This past season, she was named to the inaugural Big 12 Winter Sports Good Works Team and received OSU's Senior of Significance Award.
The magazine established the award, which was inspired by tennis legend Arthur Ashe, to honor undergraduate students of color who have achieved both athletically and academically as well as in the community.
To be included, students have to compete in an intercollegiate sport, maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2 and be active on their campuses or in their community.
OSU's 17 Arthur Ashe recipients this year are the seventh-highest total nationally and were tops among Big 12 schools.
