No. 17 Cowboys Down Instate Rival Tulsa, 5-2
March 28, 2007 | Cowboy Tennis
Oklahoma State's 17th-ranked men's tennis squad downed No. 32 Tulsa, 5-2, at the DeBois Tennis Center Tuesday in Stillwater. It was the largest margin of victory by either team in the series since OSU beat Tulsa, 4-0, in 1998.
“This was a total team effort,” head coach James Wadley said. “The team played well in a match that could have gone either way. I was really happy with the crowd and thought they could have been the difference in some of the close matches. I am really pleased with the team.”
As they did in an earlier season match up, the Cowboys (11-1) upset the Golden Hurricanes (12-6) in doubles to take a crucial early, 1-0, advantage.
At No. 1 doubles, Daniel Byrnes and Oleksandr Nedovyesov, ranked No. 83, defeated No. 81 Federico Soriano and Arnau Brugues, 8-4.
It was never close at No. 2 doubles as the Cowboys used a big upset to win the point. Artie Burmistrau and Nathan Byrnes won their fourth-straight match by defeating Diego Camacho and Ross Cunnigham, the 21st-ranked tandem in the country, 8-2.
TU evened up the score with an upset of their own once singles play started. Ricardo Soriano defeated No. 21 Ivan Puchkarov, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 2 singles. It was all Cowboys after that as OSU won the next four matches.
At No. 4 singles, freshman Dymtro Petrov continued his strong play as he downed Will Gray, 7-5, 6-1, to move his record to 9-1. His nine dual wins are tied for the team lead.
OSU's other talented freshman, Nedovyesov, came through with the biggest win of his already impressive, young career. Nedovyesov, ranked No. 57, defeated the third-ranked player in the country Brugues, 7-5, 6-4. The score was reversed from their early season match up where Brugues won, 7-5, 6-4. It was only the third loss of the spring for the Tulsa star while Nedovyesov has won six straight.
“It was a big win for Nedovyesov,” said Wadley. “It was a tremendous tennis match between two talented players. Nedovyesov knew what to expect this time and he went in with a game plan.”
Burmistrau clinched the match for the Pokes with a win at No. 5 singles. Burmistrau looked like he would have an easy day as he cruised in the first set, 6-1, against Cunningham. The senior found himself down in the second set but rallied to win a tiebreaker, 7-6 (7). Burmistrau is also on a roll as he has won five straight.
Finishing just moments behind Burmistrau was his double's partner Byrnes. The sophomore won a competitive second set to take the match, 6-2, 6-4, against Camacho at No. 6 singles. He is now 3-1 this season when playing at that position.
The Cowboys will have Wednesday off before returning to action when they host Wichita State Thursday at 2 p.m.
