Wadley Notches 600th-Career Victory
March 13, 2007 | Cowboy Tennis
With No. 9 Oklahoma State's, 5-2, win over No. 69 Penn (4-10) at the DeBois Tennis Center in Stillwater on Thursday, head tennis coach James Wadley won his 600th-career match. All 600 of his wins have come during his 35 years at the helm of OSU's men's tennis program.
“It took a lot of good players to reach 600 wins,” Wadley said. “I did not hit one forehand or backhand to win a match. I cherish every single win I have had because I have had some great kids along the way. That is what I am most proud of. I feel like I just arrived in Stillwater, I cannot believe it has been 35 years.”
Wadley becomes the seventh-active college tennis coach to join the 600 win club.
The Cowboys (7-1) won at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to take a crucial 1-0 advantage in the match. At the No. 1 spot, Daniel Byrnes and Oleksandr Nedovyesov played outstanding as the 54th-ranked duo cruised to an, 8-1, victory over Jason Pinksy and Riley.
Wadley also got a solid showing at No. 2 doubles where Artie Burmistrau and Nathan Byrnes took the victory from Joseph Lok and Jonathan Boym, 8-4.
Oklahoma State's freshmen got the Pokes going early in singles play as Nedovyesov and Dymtro Petrov cruised to victories at No. 1 and No. 4 singles, respectively.
Petrov was the first off the court when he downed Justin Fox easily, 6-1, 6-2. The freshman is off to a tremendous start as he is 6-1 this season. Nedovyesov worked quickly as he downed the 50th-ranked college player, Pinksy, 6-3, 6-1. It was Nedovyesov's fourth win over a ranked-opponent this season.
17th-ranked Puchkarov gave O-State a, 4-0, lead and clinched the win with a, 6-4, 6-4, win over Boym at No. 3 singles. Burmistrau also won his single match as he beat O'Gara, 4-6, 6-0, 7-5, at No. 6 singles and is now 3-0 since moving to No. 6 singles.
Wadley and his ninth-ranked Cowboys will look for career win No. 601 when OSU host No. 36 TCU at the Debois Tennis Center on Sunday at noon.
