Cowboys Shutout Oral Roberts to Win Fifth Straight
March 13, 2007 | Cowboy Tennis
Oklahoma State's 15th-ranked men's tennis team won its fifth straight by shutting out Oral Roberts, 7-0, Tuesday at the DeBois Tennis Center in Stillwater.
The Cowboys (9-1) took the early advantage after sweeping the doubles point from the Golden Eagles. The only doubles match that was closely contested was at the No. 3 position where Ivan Puchkarov and Oleksandr Kotsiuk played together for the first time this year. After shaking off some early dust, the duo was down 3-0, they won a tiebreaker, 8-7 (1), to defeat Clemons Geercken and Patrick Guilliod.
It was more of the same in singles as no match went three sets and in only one set did a Cowboy lose more than three games.
In his first action of the spring, Jason Wright was the first Pokes off the court. The junior handled Guilliod, 6-2, in the first set. After the set, Guilliod retired the match at No. 6 singles.
Next up it was Nedovyesov, who was named the Big 12 Player of the Week earlier today, at No. 1 singles. The freshman cruised against Alexander Dargel, 6-0, 6-1, for his fourth straight win. The Ukraine native has been on fire as of late. In his last three matches, he has only lost a combined seven games.
The match was clinched by Kotsiuk at No. 5 singles as he beat Clemons Geercken, 6-1, 6-0. It was only the sophomore's second dual match this season and he improved to 2-0.
At No. 2 singles, 17th-ranked Puchkarov put away Kaehler, 6-3, 6-3. The junior has also been playing solid of late, as he has won four straight.
Nathan Byrnes pushed the score to 6-0 with a, 6-3, 6-1, victory over Quan Farguhasen at No. 4 singles. Tuesday was as high as the sophomore has played in the singles lineup in his young career.
Nathan's brother, Daniel, completed the shutout by downing Tyrone Hill, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 3 singles. The win snapped a two-match skid for the All-American.
In other men's tennis news, when the ITA released this week's rankings on Tuesday the Cowboys fell from No. 10 to No. 15 despite going 2-0 this past week. OSU peaked at No. 9 this season but have fallen six spots since then despite not dropping a dual.
The Cowboys will get some rest before traveling to Dallas to take on the SMU Mustangs March 24.
