Oklahoma State's women's basketball team snapped a 13-game losing streak to Texas on Wednesday, defeating the Longhorns, 77-58, in front of 1,993 fans inside Gallagher-Iba Arena.
The win was OSU's first over the Longhorns since a 71-69 victory on Jan. 12, 2000 in Stillwater and was just the Cowgirls' fourth all time in 24 tries against UT.
OSU (16-7 overall, 4-6 Big 12) took a 35-26 lead into the break after holding the Longhorns (16-8, 5-5) to a 32 percent shooting effort from the floor and converting 10 UT turnovers into 19 points.
For the game, OSU shot 45 percent from the floor and knocked down 17 of its 21 free throw attempts, while Texas converted just 29 percent of its shots from the floor.
“I said from the start of conference play that when we shoot 40 percent from the field, we can beat anybody in the Big 12 Conference,” Cowgirl Head Coach Kurt Budke said. “Texas is long, quick, athletic and deep. I was definitely worried about getting to that 40 percent mark tonight.”
“I am very proud of my players on how they played tonight. I though (Andrea) Riley had a special night that she will never forget.”
Riley scored 11 of her career-high 21 points in the period, including a pair of 3-pointers to help OSU take a 10-3 lead. The Longhorns answered with an 11-0 run to take their only lead of the game as the Cowgirls rallied with a 13-0 run of their own.
After OSU scored the opening basket after the break to push the margin to 37-26, the Longhorns rallied to cut the deficit to two on a layup by Tiffany Jackson at the 13:17 mark. Once again the Cowgirls put together an offensive spurt, scoring 10 of the games next 12 points to stretch the margin back to double figures.
In addition to Riley, three other OSU players reached double figures. The Dallas, Texas native added six assists to move within five of tying the school's freshman assist mark as well.
Junior Danielle Green added 14 points and and sophomore Taylor Hardeman scored a season-high 13 points of the bench that included a 3-of-5 effort from beyond the 3-point line.
Senior Rashidat Sadiq tallied her third consecutive double-figure game with 11 points, while junior Dominique Chism grabbed a career-high nine rebounds for the Cowgirls
Carla Cortijo led the Longhorns with 16 points, while Jackson added 14 points and 10 rebounds.
OSU will return to action on Saturday at 6 p.m. when it travels to Columbia, Mo. to take on the Missouri Tigers.
